Shakespeare's rarely performed Timon of Athens comes to the Players' Ring in a modern and ambitious production.
Misfortune shows those who are not really friends.
Summary: Timon is the very picture of generosity and good will, but by giving to the ungrateful senators and merchants of Athens, she seals her own fate. Driven to madness by their inevitable ingratitude and cast into the wilderness, Timon slowly resigns herself to death. However, her friendship with an equally wronged and avenging general is the only thing that can save the city, calling the senators of Athens back to her even as she wastes away in exile…
Drawing on timely themes of inequality and greed, Timon of Athens presents the story of a time and people out of balance. This show is the crowning production of the Players’ Ring’s 20th Mainstage Season. Don't miss it.
WARNING: This production of Timon of Athens contains violence, nudity, and a sequence involving strobe light effects.
No one under the age of 18 will be admitted without parental consent. If you have photosensitive epilepsy or are otherwise affected by strobe lights, please do not attend this production without making special arrangements with the theater beforehand.
The director has a huge vision for this production. In addition to the costume, set, and props budget, we are using extensive sound engineering, fight choreography, and special effects to enhance the audience's experience.
The main reason that these elements have been brought in are deeply tied to the story itself and the structure of the play. The play begins with a lavish party and as the events of the story progress, more and more of Timon's world is pulled away from her until she is alone in the woods, where the play slows to a more philosophical mood. In order to enhance this and bring it to a visceral level for the audience, all these elements have been brought in to create a sort of sensory overload as the play progresses until the calm of the woods comes as a pleasant retreat.
Lastly, it is important for us to state that money is not being asked for simply to be thrown around - each aspect is as compact and as efficient as possible. The Players' Ring is a modest nonprofit focused on producing original or unusual works for the public viewing at affordable prices. In this spirit, we are asking for only what we need and no more. Two major sets, including a mansion and a forest, will dominate the playing time and will be the center of that budget. Costuming for the show is extensive considering the number of characters (40+ with a cast of 13), but we are working from modern palettes that allow frugal shortcuts. However, there is only so much that we can cut corners and still retain the quality that we demand of this production. As such, we hope that you will assist us in bringing this ambitious vision of a rarely performed play to life, knowing that every dollar will be spent wisely. Every little bit counts and if you do contribute, we hope to see you at the show itself, where you will find your name in our program!
