Print auto-stereographic 3D lenticular transparencies, build custom LED display frames. Limited Edition of Ten. + Postcards and prints.
Ever since I discovered lenticular imaging while working for Kodak nearly fifteen years ago, I have pursued having my 3D modeled artwork printed on lenticular. I had some samples of works that I had created for Kodak clients that Kodak printed. I soon discovered getting your own artwork printed was not an easy or inexpensive task.
Lenticular imaging for those of you who have not heard of it, is a method of storing multiple images on a single print. It can be used to "play" back a sequence of images as you move relative to it. Depending how the lenses are aligned it can be used to achieve a number of effects.
With the lenses in the vertical direction, a sequence of "stereo" views can be played back and each eye will see a different perspective. You then can perceive the print/transparency in 3D, without needing any special glasses. Lenticular is also used for animation in both lens orientations. Zooms, morphs, flips, product spins, are just a few of the animation effects.
Good lenticular printers are rare enough and finding one that will deal with you for quantities less than 500, even rarer. Name brand advertisers and commercial printers pretty much own the lenticular medium because few others can afford to play.
A single 14' x 20" image printed by a printer that WILL do low volume printing cost nearly $800 ($650 setup fee) for the first one and $210 for each additional one. Test prints cost the same as final ones. I quickly decided to print and laminate my own proofs until I was satisfied and only then provide the printer with ready to interlace files thereby eliminating the $650 artwork setup fee.
Even proofing them myself is still pretty expensive, one lenticular transparency costs me about $20 in materials and I have nowhere near a 100% success rate. All told, thirty percent might be more accurate, with loss in both the printing and laminating steps.
I've completed trial proofs of a number of images and currently several are hanging in some prototype frames at the Arete' Gallery here in Rochester, NY. "Birds of a Feather..." is now ready to go into production with my final display design as shown in the opening image.
I would like to raise the enough capital so that I may begin to print a set of ten (10) - limited edition 3D Lenticular Transparencies (plus 2 Artist Proofs) of the 3D Poser image "Birds of a Feather...".
Each transparency in this edition will ship installed in a color temperature matched LED Backlit Acrylic Display that I designed. The funds will cover the cost of printing the edition of transparencies, manufacturing the LED displays, assembly, packing and shipping costs.
Additionally 4" x 6" post cards, 8" x 10" or 12" x 14" reflection prints will be printed with the remaining funds. Minimum order is typically 500, so it can be expensive for an individual to afford production run printing. KickStarter may finally offer me a way to fund that type of printing. Let me know by investing at any level you can. Thanks.
