About this project

From when I was a little girl, I wanted to visit America. I am finally here starting classes at the International Center of Photography and will soon begin my project documenting the lives of American women in their 20s, comparing and contrasting their lives with the way my sisters and I live in Yemen. How do they dress? What are their relationships like with their families, boyfriends, colleagues? In what ways are we similar? And in which ways are we different?

I believe my project is important because there are so many misunderstandings between our societies these days. I hope that my spending time with these women on an intimate level will allow us to learn about each other's cultures and change any misconceptions and preconceived notions that might exist.

I think people will also find it interesting to see how American women are seen from a Muslim woman's point of view, resulting in amazing, unique, and revealing photographs. These photographs we be made into a gallery exhibit for display at the VII Photo Agency in Dumbo, Brooklyn. I am happy to announce that the funds raised here are tax deductible thanks to my good friends at Talking Eyes Media. The funds will be used for photo supplies necessary to complete both the production of this project and exhibit. And if there is extra, travel expenses to take it outside New York City.

I greatly appreciate the generosity and spirit of the American people and I hope this will be a positive and wonderful exchange for everyone involved.

I was born in Saudi Arabia and grew up in Yemen. As you may know these are very conservative societies. While some women are allowed to work, being female photojournalist is practically unheard of. I have had to fight all my life for my education and am the first person in my family who has graduated from university. I love photography and it is my way to communicate. I appreciate your support!
