About this project
**NOTE: KICKSTARTER TAKES AN 8% CUT OF ALL PROCEEDS. PLEASE KEEP FUNDING!**
I don't believe in the “starving artist” mentality. If you really want to do something creative in your life, go after it and make it happen.
THE HISTORY After two years of insane creativity, I have crafted a delicately intimate full-length/full-band album documenting THE HUMAN CONNECTION - the supremacy of love, the controversies within our society, and the majestic struggle of the Self.
THE ALBUM Renowned producer Matt Pierson (Diana Krall, Kirk Whalum, Brad Meldhau, Jane Monheit) producing this album at Flux Studios in downtown Manhattan. The Rolling Stones, Sean Lennon, Marc Ronson, Mick Jagger, and countless artists have all recorded masterpieces at Flux. We are slated to record for six days this summer with a slew of remarkable musicians; confirmed so far is bassist Alan Hampton (Gretchen Parlato), drummer Nate Wood (Kneebody) and pianist David Cook (Liz Right, Natasha Bedingfield).
ALBUMS COST MONEY I am paying for this album out of my pocket (along with the barely-lined pockets of HSBC, Momma, and Daddy). I have to pay the studio, the engineer, the musicians. I have to pay to get this beautiful album mixed and mastered. I have to pay to create physical copies of the albums. I have to pay for a PR campaign to promote the album, and to tour to support the album.
STEPHANIE’S BUDGET is a whopping $30,100.
$6,300 - studio time at Flux
$8,800 - production & mastering
$7,000 - bass, drums, guitar, strings, woodwinds
$2,000 - graphic design & duplication
$6,000 - distribution & promotion
MY PLEA I am writing to ask you to help me create this record. A buck, ten dollars, fifty -- whatever you can manage (can I hear one hundred? Two? THREE?) will literally catapult my career into a whirlwind of adventure. I cannot do this without you. I cannot do this without you. I cannot. I am paying for this album out of my pocket.
MY GOAL is to raise $5,000 to pay for most of my studio time at Flux.
HOW KICKSTARTER WORKS If you contribute, you receive spectacular rewards of love (see the right hand side of the screen).
If I go over my goal, the additional money will be spent on the remaining studio costs and replicating the physical copies of this delicious CD.
If my goal isn’t met, I will crawl back into my cave, your money will get refunded to you, and I will sell various organs and limbs to the bank in exchange for a meager loan with a terrible interest rate.
The campaign will end at midnight on my birthday.
OUR CONNECTION I want to share my passion, motivation, and crusade to feel alive with you. I want to make this album OURS - a project fueled by the human connection could not be created in a more perfect way.
Let’s all sing “Kumbaya” and hold hands around the fire. I love you.

Connected as Stephanie Carlin (806 friends)
In an era of fluff, filler and intellectual starvation, Stephanie Carlin’s work is a musical respite. There is a strength, power, humor and humility that belie her twenty-one years on this planet. Carlin speaks with wisdom and offers us emotional substance in an age of planned obsolescence and temporary notions. She feeds on emotion, lyrical substance, and endless depths of intricacy fused with intensely layered harmonies.
Stephanie’s husky croon is filled with particles and microtones, and her songs are colorful and crazed. Her words make us reflect and empathize. Heavily influenced by the minimalist sounds of Cat Power and Elliott Smith, her original EP “the Agony and Ecstasy of” (2008) is a gut-wrenching documentation on the loves and losses of the human heart.
A Long Island native whose path to Brooklyn always seemed clear, Carlin appeared on the New York music scene five years ago and has brought her original music to nearly 200 notable venues and festivals (CMJ Music Marathon 2009, CMJ Music Marathon 2010, Knitting Factory, Millennium Music Conference, The Stone, Public Assembly, Southpaw, Maxwell's Borders, LI Jazz Winterfest 2010, The Living Room).
Stephanie Carlin is not just another girl with a guitar. She is a young woman with a voice of bittersweet honesty and unyielding truths, straddling the lines between folk and jazz. Between poetess and prophet. Between her guttural growl and her nuanced sigh. Between the darkness and the light. This is where we find a new voice for the modern age. And that voice is the voice of Stephanie Carlin.
