I'm really sad that this didn't get funded. If there turns out to be another medium for making this happen, I hope to be spammed with all the info about it. (Spammed, because I obviously missed your comments on twitter about it, despite being a follower.)

I originally backed the $30 pledge but then upgraded it to $60. If everyone did the same we can guarantee this project will happen. I'm sure everyone here is excited and wants this so let's ensure it. These stories deserve the chance to be read but especially the chance to be written. Let us all show our appreciation to A. Lee Martinez and the great stories he's written. We are closing in on the end and as fans we can't let this project fail!

Ok, time to call out the A Lee-gion! Let's assume that the 121 backers you have are all FB friends with you. That leaves 500 FB friends. If each FB fan did $10, they would get an E-Book. That would give you $5000, so even if all 500 don't, you would still do ok with 380!!! Let's DO THIS!

I've been a supporter on one other kickstarter project, and I know it picks up in the last few days, but this is making me nuts! I am so excited for this book. It has to happen! Reposting, re-tweeting, sending good vibes, crossing my fingers, etc...

UPDATE: Just upped my pledge to the $80 level!! I decided that I really wanted 2 signed books and a signed poster. I would love to have it signed by both you and your talented wife!

What else can we do to help push this thing through? Looks like you are right at 50%, so I'm going to put this into my FB today, but any other ideas? Feel free to post a FB message to me. ~DSloan

How's about this idea? What if everyone at the $100 and $500 tiers - those with dibs on the stories, you lucky dogs -- went to Amazon and wrote a new review for your respective chosen novel -- WITH a specific mention (and maybe a link if Amazon will let you) of this campaign? Then come back here and tell everyone that it's done ... then the rest of us go there and vote up your reviews as "helpful" sending it right to the top of the reviews. Maybe we can lure some new backers who don't currently know about this project?

Thanks for the feedback, Jester. Your point is a good one, but it also overlooks an important fact. Disinterest and ignorance are virtually the same thing in this particular case. I'm sure there are plenty of great, smaller films / books / etc out there that would get support if they could get noticed, but getting noticed is the hard part. An audience that can't find you is the same, in the end, as an audience that doesn't care. Not exactly the same because one is indifferent and one is just in-the-dark, but from an artist's perspective, it amounts to the same results.

This is why the future of self-publishing (and even traditional publishing) remains murky at best. Until there is a consistent and effective way for artists to reach their audience, success and failure will always depend as much on getting exposure to the larger culture as any talent or skill involved.

So far, I've been very pleased with all the support I've gotten for this project, and hope it will continue.

Thanks for the support. And thanks for the comment.

Lee: I agree wholeheartedly -- but I think the problem that the traditional print publishing industry has on Kickstarter is the difficulty of finding an outlet for getting out the Word of Mouth to your legion of fans who buy your other books and WOULD support this campaign if they knew of it! Gamers, comics, music have tons of on-line blogs that are frequented by manic enthusiasts of the genre. Books -- not so much. There's a reason we (the manic enthusiasts of the written word) like our books -- we can hold them in our hand, inhale the "new book smell," admire the cover and binding, collect and display them (especially the rare limiteds), etc. I only came upon your campaign because I literally browsed every project in the Publishing section one night (something I have occasionally done since learning that I missed Nancy Collin's new Sonja Blue campaign, which -- criminally in my opinion -- failed due to simple lack of exposure to Nancy and Sonja's many, many fans). Don't equate ignorance with disinterest!

So, massive fan, read all your books, gave you $10. Went out tonight, got drunk (I feel like you'd approve of this), read your update, felt like a douche. Appropriately updated my pledge to reflect how much I enjoy your work. I deeply enjoy the absurdity of everything you write.

      Yep, this is true.

But the way I see it, in order for this anthology to be successful beyond Kickstarter, it is going to need a lot of people excited about it. That's why I set the goal relatively high and limited contribution options. If I cannot get around 800 people interested in buying an e-book or 320 people excited about a softcover, then, honestly, I see little hope of this project being worth pursuing.

I will be adding new reward tiers though soon. But the fact of the matter is that successful publishing efforts require a large, enthusiastic audience. That is as much about what this project is about as the money to fund it (which is a very close second)

    15. Larry%20jester%202.small

      Creator jester59388 on February 11

Lee: It's going to take a LOT of $10, $25 and $30 pledges to reach your goal! With the $100 pledges all gone and the $500 pledges a bit steep for many, you need to add some more reward tiers to coax some bigger pledges! I want this baby FUNDED!

      Ideas for additional tiers, anyone?

This is a wonderful idea and I'm already looking forward to the stories. Dibs on a character from Divine Misfortune!

You'll get an autographed softcover of the anthology. You'll also get to choose a character to be the focus of one of the short stories. This is first come, first serve, and once one novel has been "claimed", the next choice will have to be from a different novel. I'm not interested in writing five different stories about Rockwood, even if it certainly is possible. (Though such an idea is not beyond consideration at some point in the future.) You get to choose a character featured in one of the stories. The same rules apply as the $100 contributors. Once a setting has been claimed, you'll have to find another. Note too that because of the timing of the anthology's release, Helen and Troy's Epic Road Quest will have a story in the anthology, but there won't be time for anyone to suggest a character from the novel, which is why the total number of requests is limited to 9, though 10 stories will be in the anthology.

    3 backers Limited (1 of 4 left)

You'll get an autographed softcover of the anthology. You'll get to choose a character to focus a story on. (Note: The same rules apply as the $100 reward. One a novel has been claimed by someone else, it is no longer a candidate for this option.) Finally, you'll get an 8 1/2 x 11 piece of original art by me (and touched up by my graphic artist wife for that extra professional touch). This art can feature any character you like, will never be duplicated by me or placed on the internet (unless you choose to do so). It can be yours and yours alone, forever and ever.
