Hello, Beacons Fans!
First, thanks so much again for your support in 2012 for the Bathroom Beacons project. Whether or not you made it to the Burn, we hope you enjoyed being a part of the project. Thanks to you, the Beacons were a huge success on the playa last year. And the Beacons crew has been hard at work to make them a success again this year! That's right-- the Bathroom Beacons are returning to Black Rock City in 2013-- brighter, blinkier, and more fun then ever!
We've launched a Kickstarter campaign for the 2013 Beacons (details below), and hope you'll consider supporting the project again. We have a host of upgrades to the 2012 Beacons, plus a new one you're going to loooove! And we'd like to invest in infrastructure to make it easier to keep them coming back, such as storage in Reno, generators, a bike and trailer for fueling runs, and improved safety lighting.
Here's what's in store for each of the Beacons:
First, we're pleased and honored to announce our flagship from 2012, Welcome to Fabulous, was selected for an honorarium grant from the Burning Man organization this year. While we're honored by the grant, it only covers a small portion of our materials and transportation costs for bringing Fabulous and the other Beacons out to the playa.
Second, everyone's favorite pastime Beacon, The Toilet Bowl, will also be returning, with improvements to the ball return and other lane tweaks, and replacement of the white rope lights with full-color programmable LED strips sure to surprise and entertain, if not improve your game.
And last, but not least, a NEW beacon for 2013: Twisted Bristles-- a 15 foot tall toilet bowl brush. The brush head features over 1200 bristles made of 18" acrylic rods, lit by LEDs dancing in a variety of blissful patterns. The prototype in the Beacons laboratory looks amazing-- you can see a preivew video of the bristles here.
You can contribute to the 2013 campaign at the link below. We have some spiffy new rewards for 2013 (check out the coveted carabineer mug!) And you MUST watch the video. We weren't sure how we were going to top our 2012 video, but I think we may have.
Even if you can't contribute to our 2013 campaign, you can still support the project by sharing our Kickstarter campaign on Facebook, and liking our Facebook page. We bet you have a couple of friends heading to the burn that will really appreciate the service the Beacons provide.
Regardless of whether you support our 2013 campaign, thanks again for supporting the Beacons in 2012-- your support last year helped launch an amazing project we hope will make a difference for Black Rock City for years to come!
