A photography and audio installation exploring the passing of time and the nature of perception.
My name is Aidan Fitzpatrick. I'm a photographer and teaching artist, living and working in Chicago. I'm raising funds to organize my first solo show at ACRE Projects on March 4&5 in Chicago. My goal is to raise $1000, this will cover the cost of printing and framing 13 photographic pieces, and will also bring to life an audio installation.
This past summer I had a remarkable opportunity to attend the ACRE residency in Steuben, WI. Here, we lived, worked, and thought for 12 days on 100 acres. I spent most of my time immersed in the land, exploring and photographing on my own. This helped me to rediscover my fascination with perception and the nature of internal experience. I’m curious about the things only you know about and experience- And how you find yourself sharing this subjective experience with others.
I also spent time working on a collection of audiotapes that I inherited from my granny when she passed away in 2009. She created these tapes as spoken letters and stream of consciousness narration of her days while she lived on her own in Chicago. My brother and I would receive padded envelopes a couple times a year as our family moved around the country. Sometimes my mom would have the patience to put them on in the car and my granny’s voice would engulf the air as we drove to the grocery store – creating a mash of time and space. Other times it would be an isolating experience, listening to her stories alone in my room on my warbley tape player. When I make the time to sit down and listen to the tapes as an adult I realize that her focus is often on her present- which is now the past.
In the piece to be installed at ACRE- she narrates her experience looking out the window at the lake at sunrise. It’s a pulverizing of my present and her past and time in general.
I personally struggle with the passing of time and find myself filled with disbelief over my experience of the present. My days are lost, they quickly and almost immediately vanish as we make revolutions around the sun. This complication of past and present draws me to photograph transient moments in which I’m able to isolate the mystery that makes up our lives.
Thank you so much! Only with your support will this show be possible.
big hugs,
Aidan
