Our books provide inspiration and guides for car-free trips to places usually considered inaccessible without a car--via foot, bike, and transit.
Post-Car Adventuring Guidebooks feature trips and how-to information published via both print and online media.
Our project redefines basic assumptions and ideas about outdoor recreation and travel. Post-Car guidebooks provide an alternative to standard guides that only include freeway and highway-based driving directions to reach trailheads, campsites, parks, and other destinations.
The trips detailed and described in our books provide inspiration and ideas for car-free trips to areas commonly thought be to inaccessible without a personal automobile.
Our first title, Post-Car Adventuring the San Francisco Bay Area, was self-printed, distributed, and sold more than one hundred copies in independent San Francisco bookstores. We are now building upon this early success while still keeping creative and intellectual control over our research and publications. This is where you can most help us today.
We are seeking funds to research, print, publicize, and distribute a revised, second edition of the the Bay Area guide and to kickstart Post-Car Adventuring Guidebooks for Seattle, Portland, Los Angeles, New York City and Green River, Utah in collaboration with local, independent travelers and adventurers. These guidebooks are a non-profit endeavor and we will be pricing all of our books to sell and re-investing the revenue in guidebooks for more cities and regions.
We need to raise $6500 to pay for:
1. Printing 1000 copies of the Bay Area guidebook.
2. Research and printing (1000 copies) of a second title in the series (Seattle, Portland, LA, or NYC)
3. Publicity and distribution costs.
4. Paying contributors for their time and efforts.
With this one-time fund raising effort, Post-Car Press will become a self-sufficient, sustainable, independent press with the ability to continuously release titles at the intersection of publishing, design, and advocacy by continually re-investing profits from book sales back into the press.
As a practice and means of travel, we began 'post-car adventuring' two years ago to synthesize the principles of bicycle touring and hiking (sometimes even just plain old walking!) with the use of transit (buses, trains, ferries) to make 'active transportation' and travel more of an everyday (or at least every weekend!) experience. Post-Car Adventuring Guidebooks enable persons already using public transportation in their cities and towns to extend its application beyond its normal bounds and encourages those who find themselves frustratingly reliant on their cars in cities and suburbs to imagine other possibilities
The point of the Post-Car Adventuring Guidebooks series is to share our experiences, passion, and knowledge about this mode of travel and to foster and develop a culture of travel via foot, bicycle and public transportation.
Please join us in these efforts, and thank you for your support!
