Scott, did you promote this on Typophile and the type-lover sites yet? I just posted here: http://typophile.com/node/75786
Powerful, thanks for your comments even if they are negative. I am not wasting anyone's money here, as no one is required to give me money. If the subject is interesting to them they are free to donate/receive rewards for something they want to see get made. Sometimes people make films for entertainment value as well as to inform. My goal here isn't to set out and show why people hate the font, that is obvious, the goal here is explore why it was created, who created it, who is still using it and why designers have banned against it.
Scott
I believe you are wasting your time, and decent peoples money. If you really want to hate on something or try to start a cause, maybe do it on something that maters? Like telling people of how fucked our oceans are, not how you are displeased with a typeface that as you said, many people love. Goodday.
I know why people use it, I also know why its the most hated font in the world, but a large portion of the world has no idea why the font was created and why it is so widely used in design that it shouldn't be used in. That is the purpose of this documentary.
I don't get it. I don't like this font either, and therefore I don't use it. But why should I hate it? Why should anyone want to hate a font? If you don't like it, then just don't use it.
And if you want to know why other people do use it; there's plenty of reasons.
Reason one: if you are going to use any other "fun font", it will make your text less readable, especially if you use it on a small scale. Comic Sans is THE fun font that is well readable at any scale. If you think you can do better, then go out and create a fun font that is readable at any scale. I'd like to see you do it.
Reason two: Comic Sans is installed on about every computer. Does that make it a good font? No. Does that make it a bad font? Again, no. But still, it is there, on every computer, and that is very very convenient for a lot of people, and a very good reason to use it.
Of course Comic Sans is ugly. I agree with that. But is that a reason to hate it? Lots of things are ugly, but ugly things can still be usefull. As is Comic Sans.
I think you could just film this: http://www.youtube.com/watch…
Where did I use a bastardized helvetica? Should I have used Comic Sans?
i dont get it, why would you use a bastardized helvetica so tightly kearned to talk about comic sans????
I was just thinking of something similar the other day. Glad you're doing it. Can't wait to see the finished film :)
