Bringing honest, hand-made, boiled & baked bagels to a food cart in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Portland.
Create honest, hand-kneaded, hand-formed, boiled-and-baked bagels good enough to inspire fierce customer loyalty. SE Portland south of Powell Boulevard, and especially the Brooklyn Neighborhood in SE Portland, has a scarcity of good bagels. I believe my bagels are what bagel aficionados and everyday morning commuters will love. For me, this is all about creating with my own hands and effort something so good that people pay for it, and even more importantly, creating something with my own hands and effort so good that people will pay for it again, again and again.
What is a Good Bagel
In my humble opinion (which is backed up by enthusiastic fans of my bagels), a good bagel takes time and effort. First there is the starter. Then the next day, there is the mixing, kneading and forming. After proofing and then cooling over night, it is time to boil those toroids. After boiling, toppings are added, if desired, and then it is into the oven. The boiling is key to the texture of the crust and the mouth-feel of the crumb. If they are not boiled first, then they are really not bagels and are just round pieces of bread.
The quickest, most efficient way to achieve The Idea is by setting up a bagel food cart. My goal is to acquire a trailer that will be custom modified for forming, cooling, boiling, baking, and selling lots of yummy bagels. I plan on locating the cart in the Brooklyn Neighborhood of SE Portland south of Powell Boulevard, close to my home of 18 years and, more importantly, convenient for feeding the heavy morning commute traffic on Milwaukie Avenue before they make that left turn onto the Ross Island Bridge.
Where You Come In
This is my second attempt at using kickstarter to get The Idea up and running. I learned a lot from my first attempt and will be doing many more free tastings of bagels and schmears during this second campaign. During the first campaign I was humbled by how many people that I did not know that signed up to contribute and all of those contribution promises came after my few tasting events I held. I am also humbled by the help my family and friends signed up to give to the project. All in all, I ended up with 96 contributors. The beauty of kickstarter is that nobody lost contributions since it is an all or nothing game. This second attempt will build on the support developed during the first go-around and create even more widespread awareness to achieve the funding goal.
This time the fund-raising campaign will last for 40 days, so again I ask you to forward the URL of this site to anyone you think would be supportive of my endeavor and, of course, to anyone in the Portland area who's a fan of good bagels. Be sure to also "like" the Learned Monkey Bagels Facebook page and sign up to follow my efforts on Twitter @Learned_Monkey. When I reach my fundraising goal, the rewards listed on the right side of this page will spill forth. For those feeling really generous and want to be high-dollar founders above and beyond the $500 suggestion, be sure to type in your specific dollar amount.
Thank you all and here's to another big effort.
