Thank You For Helping Us Reach Our Funding Goal!

We are very humbled and feel incredibly blessed that so many people have helped us reach our Kickstarter goal!  All of us deeply appreciate your support.

While $2500 was our base goal to help cross the finish line, there are additional costs that still need to be raised for certain post-production elements and film festival fees. So please note that we still need funds to help finish the production and help get it out into festivals. In other words, PLEASE CONTINUE TO DONATE!

Again, thank you, and we hope to see you on the festival circuit very soon!

Best regards,

Zoe Sua Cho, Producer  & Gerry Kim, Co-Producer

DIRECTOR'S NOTE:

The Recorder Exam is a portrait of a young girl’s coming of age in South Korea. 9 year-old Eunhee prepares nervously for a recorder exam in the hopes that this might validate her in the eyes of her family, who are prone to ignoring their youngest child as they grapple with their own personal demons. Although she is often neglected by her family, Eunhee proceeds with her own life- preparing for a recorder exam, spending time with her only friend, Hanna, and building a toy village out of supplements from a cereal box. Success, to Eunhee, is a chance to finally, truly exist in the lives of those around her, to feel a sense of belonging that most other children take for granted.

The 1988 Seoul Olympics provide the backdrop for The Recorder Exam, a time when Korea remained “underdeveloped,” and eager to prove itself to the rest of the world. Eunhee herself suffers growing pains, desperately seeking acknowledgement from her family. And so I wanted to capture the feeling of this era, which closely parallels Eunhee’s own alienation as she struggles to find love.

In writing a coming-of-age film I have had to seriously consider the very meaning of “growth.” In The Recorder Exam, there is no clear contrast, no single glorious achievement that acts as a signifier of change. For me growth is like that- a slow, often tardy evolutionary process that occurs like the moving hands of a clock. In this film the audience is very closely observing Eunhee and her world, so that ordinary moments take on an entirely different meaning, the culmination of which results in what I hope to be an intense emotional catharsis.

WHAT WE NEED:

'The Recorder Exam' was funded by Korean Film Council, Seoul Film Commission and Kodak Korea. The film, which was shot last September in Seoul Korea, is nearing completion, but the production needs help raising funds for the following:

-Sound Mix and Design

-Composition

-Color Correct

-Design and Poster Art

We hope to finish the film for its premiere at the 2011 Columbia University Film Festival. Afterwards, we intend to show the film at domestic and international film festivals. If you are interested in donating to the project and want to see a rough cut of the film, a limited-time online link will be posted on our Kickstarter page the weekend of March 5~6.

Thank you for your support!
