About this project
WE'VE MET OUR GOAL BUT THIS WAS A MINIMUM AMOUNT--WE NEED TO RAISE MORE TO PAY THE ACTORS A REASONABLE WAGE.
I've written a play called CONGRATULATIONS, JOE and it's about an ordinary man who gets a job at a for-profit prison and proceeds to lose his mind. It's a dark comedy that mordantly explores the creeping criminalization of the U.S., the unchecked desire for power, and the relentless pursuit of fame. The play unfolds in three acts, with each act consisting of a party for Joe as he advances through the prison's hierarchy--and becomes increasingly unhinged. Since he still lives at home, his mother and father celebrate with him, along with his aunt and her rabidly demented boyfriend, who also acts as Joe's agent/manager. Joe lands a girlfriend, a fellow co-worker at the prison who has her eyes on one day becoming warden--although Joe potentially stands in her way.
A Simple Theater plans to produce this play in the summer of 2012, and we're raising the funds to put it on. The money will pay for six actors, all Equity, a director, and a set designer, along with a small amount for publicity. If the play should prove popular, we will look at taking the production to New York.
FAQ
-
No, none. Every penny is going to pay for the production, which will run around ten thousand dollars.
-
Kickstarter is all or nothing--if you set the bar too high, you risk getting nothing. So we wanted something rather than zilch.
-
A Simple Theater is the brain child of Gavin Hawk, who teaches in the Theater Dept at Eckerd College. He is a very talented theater professional, an actor, director, and improv guru, and his vision for A Simple Theater is, well, simple--he wants to produce at least one new play per year, in addition to other works that are stark in their power, devoid of excessive stagecraft--plays that rely on language and emotion rather than technical qualities.

A special place where ancient rites are maintained and proper decorum is always required. Sometimes it gets a little hazy in the Inner Circle, but with hard work we usually can penetrate the thick smoke of confusion and end up laughing at the absurdity of modern existence.
