FTL: Steam & Gameplay Video #2!
Big news! We officially signed a deal with Valve; meaning both the beta and final game will be available through Steam! Everyone who pre-ordered the game through Kickstarter can receive a Steam key in addition to the DRM free version. This also means that to take part in the beta you will need a free Steam account. If you are unable/unwilling to test the beta through Steam, we apologize, but you still have a week to change your pledge amount through Kickstarter.
A number of people have suggested that we make more gameplay videos so watch the second one on Vimeo or Youtube.

when does the game hit Steam?
Creator Gummi on March 31, 2012
That is great news! I'm steam obsessed so this news finally pushed me to pledge as previously I didn't because I would rather buy the game on Steam if the kickstarter didn't include a key. Obviously I like having a DRM-free version too so having that in addition is great as well.
Thanks guys!
Creator Omnifarious on March 30, 2012
What are your plans for all the extra money?
Creator skavenhorde on March 30, 2012
Steam, Impulse, GamersGate, Desura or the DRM version makes no difference to me. I'm just glad this game is being made. A spaceship sim/roguelike. Gotta love that.
Creator Omnifarious on March 28, 2012
My pledge is $10 right now, but if there were a beta available for Linux through Desura I would consider increasing it.
Creator Alex on March 27, 2012
I keep my game collection in Steam, so this is great news!
And thanks for offering the DRM free version alongside the Steam version.
Good luck with preparing the beta!
Creator simon on March 27, 2012
I understand the annoyance people have over the steam version. Installing the game under WINE is going to be far harder with steam involved.
And please don't criticise Alexei for reducing his pledge, it's his choice as a consumer. And he does have valid reasons. As he said rightly said if you were in his shoes you would feel the same.
Anyway, with luck this will be a temporary problem for the beta until the crossplatform support is ready for testing.
Creator Aletheides on March 27, 2012
Incredibly pumped for the beta :) This game shows so much promise for the future aswell if the FTL team choose the path to expand it further past release. :)
Creator Alex on March 27, 2012
What Matt said. It was always windows only for the beta and the final game for the other OSs.
Creator Sean on March 26, 2012
@Linux users.
The beta may work on wine. Honestly I prefer this over a cross platform jar file like minecraft.
Creator Omnifarious on March 26, 2012
I think it'd be really neat if you would go with the Kicking It Forward campaign.

Creator Matthew Collier on March 26, 2012
The beta can not come soon enough.
I missed getting to try out the onlive demo by one day, kind of a bummer. Super excited to get my hands on this, my most anticipated game of the year :D

Creator Matt on March 26, 2012
@complainers: beta was always going to be windows-only, as stated in the description. stop complaining about no linux beta. so if you moved your pledge back to $10, you actually just fixed your own mistake =P
Personally, I love steam on my windows box - great service 99% of the time. I can live with a little DRM for a world of convenience. Just rebuilt my pc... re-installing my games has never been easier.
Final product will definitely go on my linux and mac machines as well, though!
Ah well, time to go back to playing Nethack and pretending my character is a spaceship.
Creator Alexei Kozlenok on March 26, 2012
@Tony - I (sadly), dont' disagree that steam will bring a larger audience to the title (This is the retailer problem though, since a cut of all profits goes to Valve. Enough KSes on the project support it though, and as per pseudo-democracy I don't mind it coming out on Steam as well as other platforms[i ain't asking for exclusivity here]. Inflating valve is not something I personally want to do, but if the devs/rest of ks want to do it meh feed the beast)
That being said... distribution servers for beta is a weak excuse for using it exclusively, esp since this means the linux version will not get public QA and the segment will be cut out from the beta (no matter how small we are). Never mind that this will also mean the Linux version will not get public testing(leading to possible bugs, depending on internal qa, which i am guessing is not very large). Also, considering costs: let's not pretend steam is the only free file distribution service online.
As to your last point: Future implications for the developer are not really relevant here, I wish them the best of luck, but this has nothing to do with releasing the beta on steam 'ONLY' (key word)...again...the key is steam """ONLY"""... not steam 'at all'.
Creator Nori on March 26, 2012
Also, being accepted into the steam beta program will allow them to sell the game on steam in the future. For indie devs being on steam can be the difference between staying solvent or having to get another day job... Given their obvious hard work I see the potential for sales on steam being a very good thing, and will likely result in more awesome games in the future...
Creator Nori on March 26, 2012
Wow, quibbling over the beta being on steam... Pretty sad. You do realize that by having it on steam they can save hosting costs by not serving the files up and can also much more easily apply patches. Doing a beta on Desura or Steam makes a ton of sense for a indie dev and if you are going to hold this against them, especially when the final release will have a non-steam option, that is rather ridiculous...
Creator Alexei Kozlenok on March 26, 2012
@zeek - yes I can, hence why I switched my pledge to the $10 level :-P the argument was over the beta, which is steam only.
Creator Owen Williams on March 26, 2012
I personally love Steam and I'm very happy it will be available.
Great job guys so far and really looking forward to the game. I backed a few other games on Kickstarter but FTL is the one I'm most eager to play.
Creator zeekthegeek on March 26, 2012
@Alexei: Can you read? They're saying it'll be available to backers as DRM Free
Creator Alexei Kozlenok on March 26, 2012
@Sean - it's a monetary investment to develop something that you/i/whoever thinks is right, literally "putting our money where our mouth is". My money is on a full fledged linux version of this game, not steam version, further more DRM free is something I support whole-heartedly, because I do not think DRM is doing our industry any good. I am not paying 15 more dollars...or even 15more cents, for something I do not believe in, That's like being asked to support your local church when you're an atheist or jewish or something. How would you feel if they announced the beta was Linux only and you had to download/install it on your system(if you didn't already have it), and that was the only way you where going to get to get input into the game development?
Creator Sean on March 26, 2012
I can't believe someone is cheap enough to drop their pledge because of a beta on steam. It's steam. Damn.
Creator Alexei Kozlenok on March 26, 2012
@Austin - yeah reducing my pledge, still feel like it's a foolish choice by the authors, they're getting funded by crowds...before the product even comes out and they're still DRMing it, it's not like we're even asking for % profit like real VCs :-P, i don't understand the reason to DRM it early on, aside from making those of us that are not windows users(+those of us who think steam is malware) feel insulted and left out.
Creator Stefan Mochmann on March 26, 2012
Sorry but no Steam or Origin on my Computer! So i have to reduce my pledge by $15.
Creator Peter S on March 26, 2012
re making even more videos: I have a mac, so the gameplay videos are the only way I can experience the game ^_^ by all means, please make more. Maybe an even longer one?
PS: from what I can tell, you can pause the game at anytime...so if you want to explain something but you're in a really intense battle mid-game, don't forget that you can just pause. Might help you relax in the middle of a tough fight, too ^_^;
Creator James Knight on March 25, 2012
Getting your game onto Steam is huge, congratulations.
Creator George Ligonis on March 25, 2012
god, do want :(
Creator Chad Unruh on March 25, 2012
Way to go for a steam release but I second @Alex C about also giving us the DRM free version.
Creator Alex C on March 25, 2012
Steam really is the way to go in the end, but I'm glad that you decided to give the DRM free version out still. That's terrific!
Creator Megadyptes on March 25, 2012
I'd love to see more gameplay footage. It's really fun to watch.
Creator fakum12 on March 25, 2012
@Sean That's what I think as well, but you never know.....
Creator Alex on March 25, 2012
Happy about the Steam choice and I was looking forward to another video.
Thank you!
Creator Luaan on March 25, 2012
Happy about the Steam deal :) I love having the games all in one place. And looking forward to the beta, keep up the great work ;)
Creator Aletheides on March 25, 2012
Excellent news! And cool video :) Options for the user is always the best path to thread.
Creator Nicolas Brassard on March 25, 2012
Excellent news!
Creator Wintersong-Tempest of the Obsidian Order on March 25, 2012
Steam just for the Beta is ok. Supporting (and playing) DRM free games interests me more. :) A Steam version of the game for those who prefer it is ok too. The more options for the users the better. Yay for new video! :D
Creator simon on March 25, 2012
Guess i'm going to have to figure out how to install steam via WINE. If at any point you need beta testers for a native Linux build, please let us know.
Creator Alkanine on March 25, 2012
"can receive a Steam key in addition to the DRM free version. "
Creator William C Crawford on March 25, 2012
Personally, I'm glad the beta is going through Steam. I don't think it's wrong at all to add DRM to a beta version to keep it to the people who are supposed to be beta testing.
But I'm equally glad that the final version will be available DRM-free as well. I'll be playing it on Steam, but if anything ever happens to my account there, I want to know I won't lose the game.
This is great news. :)
Creator Sean on March 25, 2012
@fakum12
Of course not, steam counts as drm.
Creator lennart on March 25, 2012
+1 for Desura. You expressed hope you'd be able to do Desura as well in previous posts, so I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for that :)
Creator fakum12 on March 25, 2012
Don't think about that as awesome news.
One important question: Does my drm-free version will require Steam as well?
Creator Adam Trout on March 25, 2012
This is awesome news!!
Creator Uli on March 25, 2012
+1 for Desura (at least for the linux builds)
Creator Ben O'Steen on March 25, 2012
Congratulations on getting onto steam - it will be sure to boost your eventual sales.
However, does this mean you won't be beta testing on linux? I know that we're a tiny proportion of players but it would'vs been nice to join in.
Creator Jonathan Michael Craig on March 25, 2012
Thanks for working with steam guys : )
Creator B. Ustad on March 25, 2012
Very much looking forward to this!
Creator Chooi on March 25, 2012
YEP, as another satisfied Steam user, have upped my pledge to Beta testing to play & test this awesome game first on Steam. Good move guys!
Creator Matthew Voigt on March 25, 2012
Backing you up based on your Steam announcement. Congrats!
Creator Freyar on March 25, 2012
Also, my backing is now +$15 after the Steam announcement.
