Photo-main

A 144-page photo book chronicling Harry Chapin's ancestry, humanitarian achievements, creative projects, and intimate family moments.

[Scroll down to see 10 sneak peek pages from inside the book.]

This is the first authorized bio of Harry Chapin. The idea of this book was first suggested by Harry's older brother, James. Harry's mother, Elspeth Hart, spent several years putting together photos and captions of her ancestors, immediate family, and children. Josh Chapin worked closely with his grandmother and added more photos and detailed text. Sandy added their story of courtship, dozens of treasured family moments captured on film, stories of their adventures abroad, and details of her husband's creative and humanitarian endeavors. Throughout the book are also excerpts of Harry's personal writing.

Harry Chapin convinced US Presidents to back his cause to end world hunger, and convinced fellow musicians to reluctantly donate part of their concert proceeds to charity. It all started with passing hats at his concerts to raise funds for those in need. He attracted attention from the top talent scouts in the music business. After a stirring performance about a rainy night while driving a taxi cab in 'Frisco, he was the first singer asked back for a second consecutive night on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show, due to hundreds of viewer call-ins. Thirty-one years after his shocking passing, Harry Chapin's music and causes live on stronger than ever.

Harry's One Page Book - On a warm Wednesday morning in the spring of 1964, a twenty-two-year old Harry Chapin purchased a sixty cent, one-hundred foot roll of adding tape. He placed the robust roll inside a box and fed the sheet carefully into a typewriter. It was late May, three days before Memorial Day weekend, and the campus of Plattsburgh College was buzzing with the unofficial arrival of summer. At approximately 9 AM---armed with a sandwich, a can of 7UP soda and bag of potato chips--Harry embarked on a 24-hour literary marathon; hunting and pecking keys till sundown, and then sunrise, determined to fill all one-hundred feet of pulp with whatever honest and pure thoughts emerged from his brain. Over the course of nearly 25 hours Harry Chapin revisits his childhood, first loves, expresses gratitude for his many strong family relationships, talks about how his lousy poems became his source material for songs, resorts to countless references of potty humor, analyzes LIFE in general, remarks about the scores of people who pass by--admiring the scale and difficulty of the exercise he is attempting, and he spends a great deal of time analyzing and indulging the many facets and intricacies of SEX; after all, what twenty-two-year old boy doesn't? Excerpt from the book: "…for the thoughts that fill my mind and thus this paper were conceived alone, and will stay alone unless I find in myself, in the future, the ability to communicate them in a lasting manner, such that the great bubble that I envision of all human progress to be, might be pushed out one little micro meter by my being alive and productive on earth. I will hope and try, and laugh, mostly at myself and my efforts and hope again, and try again. It's sort of comforting to know when your being so god damn lousy sincere that you are not completely full of shit." In an effort to raise funds for STORY OF A LIFE: The Harry Chapin Family Album, we are offering a rare opportunity to buy a replica of this wildy-unique Harry Chapin literary work. The text will all be reprinted on a single one-hundred foot long roll of paper. Harry's son, Jono, will handcraft a wooden box which will house the roll, along with a special coin inlay, and we are currently designing a simple scrolling mechanism that will allow the reader to view and read the material in its original one page format. Each box will be numbered after the total amount of boxes are ordered. If five total are ordered, than if you are the third person to order, your box will be marked 3/5 . A letter of authenticity will accompany the item, as will a disclaimer stating that none of the material may be re-posted anywhere; in any form electronic or printed. The written material is exclusive to the purchaser. The opportunity to procure this item will cease when the Kickstarter campaign ends on Thursday, August 23rd, 2012. The boxes will be numbered according to when orders are received. For example, the first person to pledge this item and place and order will receive #1 out of the final number ordered. Please expect roughly three to four months for delivery. We promise to make every effort to have them complete and delivered before Christmas. This special item will ship via FedEx Priority1 service with a signature required. If you have any questions please feel free to ask. A special thanks to the Chapin Family for making this available to the fans in an effort to raise funds for the production of this book.
