The SANTA CATALINA FILM FESTIVAL will be on "Hollywood's Island," still within Los Angeles County, and only 26 miles across the sea. Also, it's the ONLY resort island off the west coast of the United States!... next stop Hawaii...
SO WHY ARE WE SO EXCITED TO HAVE THIS FILM FESTIVAL?
THE SHORT STORY OF IT ALL (But also see video above):
- We are industry professionals that love film, the creative process and people involved with making it happen, and the finished pieces of art it eventually becomes.
- Since it's primarily a resort community catering to tourism, Santa Catalina Island's economy has been hurting throughout the recent years, right in line with our overall economy. But it's an amazing treasure with rich beauty, ICONIC HOLLYWOOD, SPORTS, and AMERICAN history that NEEDS to be kept alive. Also, because over 80% of it is dedicated to conservation, it provides conservation programs with a global reach alongside many other world organizations, including the quickest recovery of an endangered species anywhere around the world (See video above).
- We will bring our love of film back to a place off the coast of Los Angeles that has hosted every major film star in the past 100 years, but also innovated film with the world's first-ever 1,200 seat movie theater built for sound (See video above).
- So in a time when everyone is starting a film festival to "just have their own," we feel this film festival correctly and appropriately honors this island's unique film history, beauty and conservation efforts. Consider it the Monaco of the United States, with true Hollywood royalty and stories attached to it.
It will bring all of the "Glitz and Glam" of Hollywood back to the island in full force while also helping to preserve its rich past and beauty!
THE LONGER STORY OF IT ALL (But also see video above):
We will celebrate the art and entertainment of mainstream Independent film while also protecting the island's beauty and many animal and plant life species indigenous to the island. Our beneficiary, the Catalina Island Conservancy, makes the latter of those efforts possible through this film festival.
Legendary Actor and Environmental champion, ED BEGLEY, Jr. and Grammy Award Winners, ALL-4-ONE, have already signed on to donate their time to our board of directors and to help make this film festival a success along with you and your pledges. Many other celebrities are on the cusp of confirming their appearances and donated efforts, but to show our appreciation, it will still take a huge financial commitment from us to get them to the island, host them, find accommodations, and all the other entities involved with putting their act or appearance together (IE. bringing people and equipment they may need on and off the island for specialty audio/visual jobs and functions).
And more than any other film festival you may come across, we really do need your pledges because events like this may not be cheap in general, but it's almost double when you're talking about putting it up on an island.... and.... We ARE talking about putting it up on an island! :) There are huge costs for venues, equipment rentals, programs, tickets, posters, advertising, volunteer accommodations, travel expenses, insurance, permits (and all the other boring "etc.." stuff you would expect).
Through screenings and associated events, the festival aims to present a wide spectrum of film making: feature films, documentaries, screenplays, animation, short films, experimental, student work, and also focus on a separate series of films within the festival that are dedicated to conservation. The SANTA CATALINA FILM FESTIVAL wants to accredit not only mainstream filmmakers, but along with our beneficiary, the Catalina Island Conservancy, also those filmmakers that are dedicated to nurturing our goal of protecting, restoring, and experiencing the power of nature here on Santa Catalina, and all over the planet.
The SANTA CATALINA FILM FESTIVAL is about the filmmakers’ opportunity to entertain, educate and inspire their audience, just like the island itself.
