THE PAPER MIRROR: DRAWING ALISON BECHDEL
A BRIGHT IDEA... Back in the early winter of 2010, artist Riva Lehrer told me that she was drawing a portrait of cartoonist and graphic novelist Alison Bechdel. I emailed Riva and told her that filming Riva drawing Alison’s portrait would make an interesting short film. Riva and Alison soon agreed to let me film them talking and working on the portrait.
I got the chance to talk with Alison about the process of
writing Are You My Mother? At that time she was in the midst of
writing and drawing her graphic novel. Over the course of the next year I would pop in and out of
Riva's art studio documenting the ups and downs of creating the portrait of
Alison.
The Paper Mirror (Running Time: 34 minutes) captures a pivotal collaboration between these
two influential artists. It also offers a peek into a time when both artists are trying out new and unexpected artistic terrain. Riva and
Alison are both funny,
poignant, extremely talented artists who graciously allowed me to document these intriguing and intimate moments in their lives.
PROJECT DETAILS - There is no film like this one -- this intimate inside look into the collaboration between two amazing artists.
We need your help to finish the film! Your
contribution will help us complete the following:
- Animation by Shelley Dodson
- Music by Laurie Lee Moses and Ney Alliey
- Produce a professional sound mix by Lou Mallozzi
- Create postcards designed by Chicago artist Jess Weida
- Edit an official film trailer and send the film to festivals around the country.
- Website design
Currently, animator Shelley Long is working on the animated
sequences and we are about to have
a sound mix created.
In case you do not know anything about Kickstarter, if
we do not raise the complete amount by the certain given date, you will not be
charged and the project will not be funded.
