The link between food & health fascinates me. When one is a mom & chief caretaker of the family, one learns to ferret out the best foods for the family. However, I must admit I have had more than my fair share of junk food & irresponsible eating in the past. With my diagnosis 2 years ago of celiac disease, I realized that bad eating was simply not an option. Thus began my deep curiosity about foods from the past, & the wisdom that we could draw upon in order to solve our current problems. My own background growing up in India brought back habits & memories of cooking from natural ingredients, fermenting foods, and more.
This idea has been brewing in my head for a while now, but between various roles that one juggles everyday, this project lay buried as a dream. Now as I am working on my web application aimed at people living with food allergies, it seems a very good time to dig deeper into this fascinating subject.
Thanks for your comments.
I believe we will get it right. We plan to move forward gradually & organically. In the first phase, we will do a first pass at key elements that every celiac worries about every day: eating out, products, etc. We also do not plan to review every restaurant & product ourselves; rather, we will encourage our user base & employ wisdom of the crowds to assess resources that will benefit our users. Finally, we plan to make this a subscription-based site so that we do not have to rely on businesses to fund our efforts. Our goal is to provide relevant, unbiased & updated information to celiacs, & we would like to make sure that businesses & service providers do not adulterate the core information we provide; advertisements & sponsored pages will be clearly marked as such.
Why would you get into this enterprise? There are at least 5 sites in the USA that are doing what you describe on your project - listing restaurants, information for people with Celiac Disease. Have you done any market research as to how you are going to compete and be a success? This project is destined to fail with all that you are taking on - you should, if you intent to proceed, do one part at a time, in stages rather than covering the whole spectrum of Celiac Disease issues at once. I wish you luck. Most of these sites that I have seen since the early 2000's have not made it and the ones out there now in the USA are not kept up to date or allow businesses to self promote which does no good for the Celiac as the Celiac does not know what standards the business is following. Talk to Ellen at TheCeliacScene.com - she has certain standards before a restaurant will be posted and one is a celiac has to review it and on top, if there is a chapter nearby they have to verify it too - so there is no self promoting like the majority of sites in the USA have for restaurants.
