About this project

Gluten Watchers application is conceived (in this first stage) as a web & mobile application that will provide information about gluten free options to celiac sufferers & their caregivers. Since celiac disease can be alleviated only by following a strict gluten-free diet, every day & for life, it is a challenge for almost every celiac to eat & live safely. As any celiac will tell you, most products in the American supermarket today are unsafe for them, as they are highly processed & contain varying amounts of wheat or other unsafe ingredients; as if that was not enough, the celiac patient has to watch for toothpastes, mouthwashes, lipsticks & makeup & such that also typically contain gluten. Last but not least, most celiacs fear eating out because of the fear of cross-contamination in the kitchen: the same ladle or pot or cooking oil may have been previously used to cook a gluten-containing item.

So the challenges are many. Being a celiac & geek myself, I aim to create a web application that alleviates some of the above problems. With the help of this app, a celiac would be able to get customized information about where to eat in a certain city or town, what gluten free products to buy & where, gluten free recipes, safe & unsafe foods, & more; in a future version of this product, we will add more social networking features so that celiacs can share vital tips & stories amongst themselves, as well as include information for other countries. This app will work on both desktops as well as mobile phones.

The funds we are currently seeking will be used to launch the first version of the application. With these funds, we will be able to hire key people to wrap up this phase of the project. We are hoping to launch the first version within 3 months of getting funded here.
