Adapted from the short story by Fight Club author Chuck Palahniuk, Romance is a dark drama/comedy that explores the true face of love.
About the Film:
Romance is a film adapted from a story by Fight Club author Chuck Palahniuk that was published in the August 2011 issue of Playboy Magazine. Romance rides the edge of the modern love story in a twisted tale of attraction, fear, sex, and ultimately consumption.
After his girlfriend dies from cancer John finds himself overweight and thrust back into a hopeless world. When a girl who claims to be Britney Spears hits on him, he can't believe his luck. She looks like a supermodel and parties like Hollywood. The only reason she doesn't dump him for someone more attractive is he keeps the party rolling... or at least that's the story he's sticking with.
Here's how Chuck describes it: "The story is called 'Romance,' and it's the most redemptive story I've ever written. Look for a good, old-fashioned boy-meets-girl love story culminating in the birth of beautiful babies. I'll be reading it on tour in October for 'Damned.'"
Portland-based Producer/Director Andy Mingo and Executive Producer Lidia Yuknavitch have assembled a brilliant cast and crew to bring this story to the screen. Principal photography will start in late August 2011 and is scheduled to wrap in the middle of September.
What we need:
We are in need of initial production funds. Like most independent filmmakers we fight, claw, and scratch our way through production, though ultimately we wouldn't be able to do that without your help. This specifically will include: $1000 production insurance, $2600 location fees (14 locations in all), $1300 equipment rentals, $1000 for a makeup artist, $1000 for audio recording, $600 for craft services.
All principal cast and crew have donated their time and labor based on the merit of the story, script, and the individual talents that each of the others bring to the project.
With a projected seven day shoot, we will need a minimum of $7,500, but we can use a lot more. We are also offering some limited edition items like August 2011 issues of Playboy and official film slates autographed by Chuck Palahniuk.
This is truly a grass roots film project, and you can further help us by spreading the word; please repost this URL (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/639555541/romance-a-film-by-andy-mingo) to anyone that loves Chuck's work and its adaptation to film.
Who we are:
Lidia Yuknavitch is the Executive Producer of Romance. Coming off the success of her new memoir The Chronology of Water, Lidia brings a creative vision to the overall production. She also happens to be married to the film's director/producer Andy Mingo, thus making the production a family affair. She is also the author of three works of short fiction: Her Other Mouths, Liberty’s Excess, and Real to Reel, as well as a book of literary criticism, Allegories of Violence. Her work has appeared in Ms., The Iowa Review, Exquisite Corpse, Another Chicago Magazine, Fiction International,Zyzzyva, and elsewhere.
Director/Producer Andy Mingo's most recent film "Georgie's Big Break" was adapted from a story by Portland author Monica Drake and featured such literary stars as Chuck Palahniuk, Chelsea Cain, and Willy Vlautin. He is the director of seven short films and one feature (The Iconographer). His films have been included in festivals and screenings such as The Northwest Film & Video Festival, the PDX Film Festival, the Longbaugh Film Festival, and Northwest Tracking- Journal of Short Film V.11.
Associate Producer Marc Mohan is a longtime Portland film critic, covering independent cinema for The Oregonian for years in the column Beyond the Multiplex. He is the owner of the independent video store Video Verite, and currently serves as president of the Far From Hollywood Film Society, and started to learn what life is like on the other side of the screen by serving as an Assistant Director on "Georgie's Big Break." Turns out it's exhilarating, educational, and full of more surprises than he imagined. Maybe he's been too hard on filmmakers over the years...
Justin Alpern is the Director of Photography for "Romance" and has worked on numerous film projects including Old Town diary, where he worked as a camera operator for John Campbell, Alienboy, and as the Director of Photography for "Georgie's Big Break." He was also the Director of Photography and editor for Kill to Grill, a forth coming television show starring Super Bowl XX Champion Tim Wrightman . Justin has also worked with numours corporate and non profit clients including Amazon.com, SAMHSA, Compassion and Choices.
