About this project

Thickening the Plot: Reclaiming • Restoring • Refreshing is a collaborative art installation between Ruth Ann Anderson and Jill D'Agnenica. They plan to create a labyrinth on the grounds of Angels Gate Cultural Center, the former Fort MacArthur, a U.S. Army post which guarded the Los Angeles harbor from 1914 to 1974.

Walking the labyrinth is a spiritual act—an act of pilgrimage—to self-knowledge, intuition, healing, imagination, intention. The labyrinth is a wide and gracious path generous with its gifts of support, clarity, empowerment, and consoling.

The labyrinth’s outer dimension will be 25’ diameter and will be created by plants and “moon breads” which will contain seeds. The breads will dissolve and release seeds over time, giving the labyrinth continued new growth while older plants grow larger. Viewers will be invited to choose a black rock at the entrance and carry on the walk inward. In the center of the labyrinth there will be a 4’ diameter pond. White chalk will be provided for participants to write their intentions/wishes for the planet/dreams for themselves, etc. on the rock and then place in the pond. Over time, the chalk writing will be released, refreshed, dissolved symbolizing the release of the writing into the elements of the Universe.

Your donation will help us with funding for plants, soil amendment, flour and seeds, black river rocks, and ground cover for paths.

Ruth Ann Anderson graduated with an MFA in Sculpture. Believing in the equality and interdependence of all life, the immediacy of the earth and the importance of walking upon the earth as a sacred journey she has focused on creating environments with contemplative space. Anderson states "I have created art out of my experience, my passions, my beliefs and my relationship to the earth. I have a strong commitment to art making both in my personal work, in public art and in using art as political action. As frequently quoted from an earlier decade, The Personal is Political."
Jill D'Agnenica graduated with her MFA in Painting and Sculpture. Her interest lies in creating pieces that occurred in places where people "happen upon" a situation, unawares, taking viewers beyond their everyday concerns to a moment of reflection and wonder. Explorations of community and interconnection are recurring themes in her work, made manifest at various stages of the art making process, from concept and fabrication to the final presentation of the piece.
In the early 90s Anderson and D’Agnenica collaborated with two other artists to create an installation that focused on the sacred elements of earth, air, fire and water. Anderson and D'Agnenica find common ground in creating experience for viewers that invites contemplation, rethinking and wonder.
