How goes it?
Hey, any more updates?
Great update. Love the roll call.
Wow, that is a LOT of interviews. Glad to see you're making tons of progress. Can't wait to see the results!
New update and video posted!
How is the project moving along?
Alright! Way to go guys!
Congrats! Can't wait to see the final product!
This is a fantastic project and I'm absolutely pleased as punch to back it however I can. I'll make sure to plug it on my Twitter feed and see if I can't get you some more free publicity ;)
Remember when Katie Couric and Bryant Gumbel mocked those who used the Internet?
http://www.boingboing.net/2011/01/31/bryant-gumbel-and-ka.html
Nothing bespeaks of the bona fide need to push science and technology forward than those who would mock and belittle the early adopters and pioneers of the novel. Nothing is more important than reaching those who will be the counter-voice against those who wear their mediocrity and sameness as a badge, as evidenced by Couric and Gumbel. Where would we be now if everyone heeded them? Is what they do today, any different? really?
The 'Internet' back-then is at a state of what Synthetic Biology is now; I hope you go ahead with this film, regardless of the outcome of the 'starter'. This is a story that 'needs' to be told, a science that needs to be learned, and a technology to be developed.
"The future is already here – it's just not very evenly distributed", a visionary quote from William Gibson, who like Ray Bradbury considers the Internet 'a waste of time'. Two men who should go down in history like Katie Couric and Bryant Gumbel as the biggest brain-clots in recent memory -- a tribute to the scene in the movie "Pirates of Silicon Valley" where Bill Gates states much the same thing about IBM in the 80's.
Those who actually change the future are those who believe they actually can; we are the ones we've been waiting for. Sponsor the future, sponsor the film.
Guys, I've just pledged big time (for me at least) and hope you hit your milestone! I've promoted it a bit on my blog and Twitter streams. I hope you get a few pledges in that way.
My post: http://bit.ly/g7w8xz
Let me know if you need a film hack ex-scientist to review any drafts! :-)
i like the movie and i like webs ok!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sounds really cool! It seems pretty hard to get 30,000 dollars in only 45 days. Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The film stills look great and the content sounds fantasizing. My guess is the only way your going to make the 30,000 limit is to create a killer incentive on a pledged in the 30 to 60 dollar region and get hundreds of people to pledge. My advice would be a simple DVD pledge in this range...Good luck guys!!!
Have you guys done any work for bands (local or otherwise) in the past? If so, you should work with them to set up a show that donates tickets sales to your project. I went to one at Mississippi Studios for the documentary Play Again (http://www.groundproductions.com/playagain/index.php) last month where Victor Wooten put on an amazing 2+ hour show and gave all of the money from the ticket sales to the film. In between his two sets they showed a trailer for the film and did a short Q & A with the director and producers. Good times.
If the band raised more than $3k, they could donate it all in one chunk and get the weekend at the Oregon Coast . . .
In regards to the question of scientific consultants: the short answer is yes, absolutely we have and will have scientific consultants on the project. David Goodsell for one has a Phd in BioChemistry, and is a researcher at the Scripts Institute in San Diego, so in addition to helping us with visual style of the animation he is going to help us make sure that the animations are correct.
And as the film gets cut together we will send drafts of it out to a number of people to get feedback on the clarity and accuracy of both the science and the history. One of the trickiest things is finding the balance between detailed accuracy and the necessary simplification required to clearly explain these systems in understandable ways in two hours.
Hi, I'm wondering if you have any scientific consultants on this project? How are you going to ensure accuracy?
An article was recently published about this project here:
http://scienceblogs.com/bioephemera/2011/01/spidergoats_a_synthetic_bio_ho.php…
Her main gripe was that the creepy music wasn't necessarily bad, but that for some of us wishing to go into this field, we would hope that if we are spending money on this, that most of the film will have positive music and portray the field in a exciting way. I mostly agree with her, but i don't mind a little bit of Frankenstein music now and again. :)
Sounds like a great project. I am also really interested in the video as well, however seeing how it will not charge me until the 43 days are up I am leaving it at a 1 dollar donation. I may change it closer to the date when I know my budget :P.
Good luck to you guys and I hope you reach your goal! It seems like a great documentary.
I love the idea and backed the project, but I have to voice one gripe: Presumably anybody interested in the project is interested in seeing the film. Doesn't it make sense to put a copy of the film at a reward tier priced comparable to the cost of buying a DVD? It's rather stingy to hold that back to the $100 price point for the folks showing interest and faith in your project this early.
