ELECTRIC DAISY CARNIVAL: NEW FORMS

We're raising finishing funds for ELECTRIC DAISY CARNIVAL: NEW FORMS, a movie about one of electronic dance music culture’s seminal events, Insomniac’s Electric Daisy Carnival, and inviting you to become part of the Electric Daisy Carnival family.  Your contribution will go towards post-production expenses on NEW FORMS, and your spirit will be alive in every single frame of the movie that you have helped create.

Specifically, funds go towards additional filming, editing, sound mixing, music licensing, as well as manufacturing and distribution expenses for the independently produced film.  Featuring performances by some of the world’s top DJs and electronic music producers, along with documentary footage and interviews with iconic figures in the dance community, NEW FORMS captures the essence—and the spirit—of the scene like no other film has ever done.

BACKGROUND

Depending on whether you have your ear to the ground or you sit squarely in the mainstream, Insomniac's Electric Daisy Carnival is either a touchstone experience that has become an annual, must-do pilgrimage or the biggest thing you've never heard about.  Now in its 16th year, EDC has nearly doubled in size each of the past five years straight.

Last year's documentary on the festival, ELECTRIC DAISY CARNIVAL EXPERIENCE, which features musical performances by Deadmau5, David Guetta, Kaskade, Swedish House Mafia, Travis Barker, Afrojack, Will.I.Am. and Moby, among others, captures a turning point in the underground scene, and became something of a scandal when 10,000 people unexpectedly showed up for the movie premiere at the Chinese Theater in Hollywood, California.  The unexpected turnout prompted a violent crackdown on a peaceful crowd by police in riot gear, who shut down Hollywood Blvd with tear gas and rubber bullets.  The event sparked international media attention, and anyone, including all the major theater chains preparing to show the movie, who might have been unaware of the underground scene's popularity no longer had any excuses.   

Even before the unfortunate incident at the premiere, many of the 600 or so theaters slated to show the film had sold out well in advance of the film’s release.  The week after the premiere, still days before the movie opened, EDC movie release dance parties were spontaneously popping up across the country and Rolling Stone proclaimed, ‘Dance Music Rules 2011.’  Diehard fans previously unable to attend the seminal event, which is often compared to Woodstock, as well as other people who had successfully made the pilgrimage to EDC and wanted to relive their experience were eagerly looking forward to immersing themselves in the electronic music festival’s singular magic at movie theaters all across the nation. 

So it came as somewhat of a SHOCK when 90% of those theaters suddenly pulled the film from their schedule, just before the film opened.

It didn’t help that police warned theaters of possible riots at the screenings.  

Riots?

At movie theaters?  

Whatever motivated the theaters’ decision to pull the film, political pressure, genuine fear of the underground scene, or a concerted effort by the conservative Establishment to crush the explosive growth of electronic dance music culture like so many attempts to stop popular music movements in the past, ELECTRIC DAISY CARNIVAL EXPERIENCE joined an unfortunate family of films that had been banned, censored or otherwise restricted from being seen by the general public.

Unable to put the toothpaste back in the tube, we set our sights on the future and decided to make another movie, this one about the evolution of Electric Daisy Carnival and its recent move to Las Vegas with such luminaries as Tiesto, David Guetta, Calvin Harris, Steve Aoki, Swedish House Mafia, Benny Benassi, Skrillex, Bloody Beetroots, Major Lazer and Afrojack. Thus, the name, NEW FORMS.  We are also committed to a distribution strategy which brings the movie directly to you, the fans.
