The Best Jazz Band in the Triangle in 2011 & 2012 will record an album that is so awesome it will melt your face (but not literally).
Peter Lamb and The Wolves second album will be titled after the place where the band first played together, Humble Pie. Our goal is not to just record an album that sounds great (though we do want to record an album that does sound great - and we will). . . We want Humble Pie to be pleasing to the eye as well as to the ear. This will be our timestamp in history and we hope to create something that will still be interesting if picked up when we're all going to work and the store in aerocars.
Humble Pie will include some existing tunes that we have arranged in our own way as well as some originals written by various members of the band; meaning some will require us to purchase rights and some won't. Some of the recordings will be done live and others will be captured in a studio. We will be using the amazing Dave Tilley as our Recording Engineer. He recorded our first album live at Marsh Woodwinds in front of a raucous audience and it turned out to be not to shabby. :) Dave uses older microphones, electronics and recording techniques when engineering records. He prefers to mix records using an analog console and vacuum-tube electronics. This process of working manually can take longer than using a computer with digital audio software, but the results sound great and are worth the extra effort!! The digital download will be available weeks before the physical CD and could be yours! Check out our reward options.
We will also record a 2nd bootleg bonus CD that will only be available through Kickstarter and that CD will feature really cool people who we think you'll dig: Maceo Parker (best known for his time with James Brown, Prince, Funkadelic, George Clinton, and many more), Django Haskins and Mark Simonson from The Old Ceremony, Dave Wright from the Countdown Quartet (and further back from the Squirrel Nut Zippers), Mary Boone from the NC Symphony, the Bullfrog Willard McGhee, Stephen Riley, Ed Stephenson, Paul Rogers, Laura Windley and Lucian Cobb from the Mint Julep Jazz Band, Sidecar Social Club and Bernie Petteway.
Jeff Carroll, Mastering Enginner at Bluefiled Mastering will apply the finishing touches to the recording. A life-long musician and songwriter, Jeff has been an advocate of music education, fostering community through involvement with various music-oriented projects and non-profit organizations. He has been a featured panelist at several audio and music industry conferences. He is a voting member of the the Audio Engineering Society and the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (the Grammys).
We wanted our second album to not only preserve our music, the music of Peter Lamb and The Wolves, but to preserve the voices, sounds, photos and artwork from the people who add art to our world. They will help this to be a truly unique album. The photography will be shot by the increasingly in demand Photog Emily Alane. Once you see her stuff, you're going to want to hire her to shoot your engagement, wedding, baby or family pictures - pretty much anything you'd want to stick on a card and send to people to show them how great you're doing. She can capture it like no one else.
Another one of the artists we asked to be part of this project (and he said yes!) is Paul Friedrich. Paul is really cool, local to Raleigh, and known for his Eisner Award-nominated graphic novel "Onion Head Monster". You can Google him if you want. He is considered one of the artists and writers in the forefront of the LowDefPop art movement. Told you he's really cool. He's already done a t-shirt and bumper sticker design. Check it out. You want one, don't you?
Another artist we've engaged is Robert Ruehlman. He did the design for our last album. ALL BY HAND. It was really mind blowing to see that all those little pages came from posters that he created using amazing techniques and colors. Robert's work has been seen in the National Design Triennial exhibition at the Smithsonian / Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum. Six of his books have been chosen for the American Institute of Graphic Arts 50 Best Books of the Year since 2002. He received a ARLIS/NA George Wittenborn Memorial Award for The Art of Richard Tuttle in 2004. His work has been included in the California Design Biennial at the Pasadena Museum of California Art in 2005. As if that wasn't enough, his stuff has also been published in the Type Directors Club Typography 26, Print Regional Design Annual 2006, the Adobe Proxy Interactive Design Magazine, and has been praised by critics in The New York Times, The San Francisco Chronicle, and The Los Angeles Times Book Review. He's a badass and you can nab a piece of his original work that will go into this album from our rewards.
So you're wondering who PLATW are? Check out a not too distant interview on NPR's The State of Things with Frank Stasio. This is audio only but totally worth a listen. The guys play 'Mary Anne' and 'Temptation' during the interview. Pretty sweet.
The band has a huge Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill fan base and has been voted BEST JAZZ BAND IN THE TRIANGLE for two years in a row (2011, 2012) by the Independent Weekly.
Here's what some others have been saying about PLATW.
"PLATW are a crack team of local jazz musicians that dig into stylish traditional jazz with such rich texture and vigor you’ll feel as if you’ve somehow stumbled into a side-street jazz bar in the 60s. Instrumental interplay is favored over virtuosic leads. A revolving door of piano, wind and rhythmic leads keeps things interesting as charming vocals organize the cuts into satisfying nuggets." -Jordan Lawrence of Shuffle Magazine
"Just listening to the no-boundaries, acoustic jazz quintet Peter Lamb and The Wolves, you might guess that it formed to celebrate Truman's inauguration, not Obama's. Called into existence in 2008 to play Humble Pie's presidential party, the band that resulted was just too good to leave be. Nowadays, living up to their fairy-tale namesakes, the Wolves peddle languid sophistication that is always a little bit dangerous. Their repertoire reaches back to New Orleans' earliest syncopaters but also forward to hipster bards like Bob Dylan and Tom Waits; a tango might trip on the heels of a French waltz or a Russian folk song. The Wolves are sought out by swing dancers, but their tenderer tunes make the perfect nightcap for late-night lovers." -Sylvia Pfeiffenberger of Indy Week
"Peter Lamb, saxophonist of Peter Lamb and the Wolves just wants to play music. Having assembled an All-Star lineup of local jazz greats to entertain his song arrangements, Lamb says this band is “my personality through music.” The Wolves consist of vocalist (“a badass belter”) and keyboardist Mark Wells, Pete Kimosh on bass, Al Strong on trumpet, and drummer Steve Coffman. Peter Lamb and the Wolves’ strength and appeal lie in the heart and soul of the music, not merely technical ability, and Lamb says that his songs are for every music lover, not only “jazz snobs.” - Scott O. of NewRaleigh.com
Ready to meet the band?
Peter Lamb could have quite possibly been born with a saxophone in his hand. While typically referred to as a jazz musician, Peter garners his inspiration from different genres and artists all over the world. He loves to play a sexy tango or a heart-wrenching waltz, an endearing ballad, a Russian folk song, a favorite childhood video game or comic book super hero theme song. On his personal playlist you will find music from Charles Mingus, John Coltrane, Leonard Cohen, Mozart, Tom Waits, Thelonius Monk, Dexter Gordon, Lester Young, The Cars, Talking Heads, The Pixies, The Beatles, Bob Dylan. The list could go on forever and will never stop growing. You can hear his eclectic tastes in the music he plays.
Peter Lamb and The Wolves has come a long way since that first performance for the Inauguration of President Obama in 2008. On January 21, 2013, the band will play the Tar Heel State Presidential Inaugural Ball at the Fort Myer’s Officers Club adjacent to the Arlington National Cemetery. They also played two nights at the DNC in Charlotte. I tell you, this band is going places.
Mark Wells has been an active part of the Triangle jazz scene for over 10 years. Currently, Mark is playing with the Jazz and NewOrleans R&B outfit, Peter Lamb and the Wolves. He is prominently featured on the Wolves self-titled debut album, which was released in December of 2010. The CD has gotten favorable national and local press.
When Mark isn't working with the Wolves or freelancing, He has a regular
group of his own, The Mark Wells Quartet, which specializes in blues and
americana. Aside from Jazz, Mark has backed up a wide range of local talent including Darren Jesse (Ben Folds Five), Mac McCaughan (Superchunk), and Phonte (Little Brother). Mark was a founding member of Sankofa, an influential
hip-hop jazz group that released two albums and opened for the likes of the
Roots, Outkast, and Busta Rhymes. In 2009, Mark played a series of
concerts with the the Pointer Sisters and the NC Symphony.
Al Strong is a Washington, D.C. native trumpeter, arranger, and composer. Since he first emerged on the scene in 1998 as a jazz studies major at NCCU, Strong has been an up and coming artist in jazz. Strong is an alumnus and current adjunct professor at the widely acclaimed North Carolina Central University (NCCU) Jazz Studies program.
Strong has spent time on local jazz scenes in Chicago, D.C., and abroad; however, he still considers Durham to be one of the most culturally vibrant cities in the country, and as so made it his home. Strong’s vision is to stay true to whatever style or genre of music he is asked to present, while still honoring the integrity, and spirit of the elders/ancestors who sacrificed so much to see that good music would always have an audience.
Stephen Coffman has been destined to take charge behind the drum set since the age of 3 and he's done just that. Thanks to a very fertile and friendly music scene around the triangle, Stephen benefited from working along side of the many local heavyweights, frequenting an array of venues in the area. He has toured throughout the country in the world renown Michael Jackson Tribute Band, Who’s Bad and has taken the stage from New York to San Diego and everywhere in between.
Aside from local performance and recording work, Stephen is a dedicated music educator at Carrborro Music Studio, Cary School of Music and also teaches private lessons from his home in Durham. From private drum lessons to judging state Jazz band competitions, Stephen is just as comfortable on stage as he is in the classroom. He has performed workshops and clinics at schools and community centers throughout the country.
Peter "The Flying Gypsyman" Kimosh is a bass player and Recording Engineer from Durham, NC. While deeply rooted in Jazz, he is well versed in many styles including Rock, Reggae, HipHop, Salsa, Orchestral, Gospel, and everything in between. This versatility has brought him too many places ranging from touring with orchestras in Italy to DPAC to the local corner spot. Currently he plays with Peter Lamb and the Wolves, The Beast, and Orquesta GarDel, The Tim Smith Band and Shana Tucker.
Forgive the raw recording below. Wondering if these guys know how to have fun? Raise a glass and sing along.
If you were scratching your head a little and wondering if you were seeing things, don't worry, you do not need to adjust your monitor or prescription. We have had the awesome privilege to play with not just one amazing bassist, but two. In some of our older recordings you will hear George Knott on bass and bass saxophone and you will see him or hear him in some of the interviews or videos that we've done and posted here. George is a very dear friend to the band and childhood friend of Peter Lamb's. Upon occassion George still fills in when Kimosh can't play. George ran off and started his own band; a swing band called Atomic Rhythm Allstars. We totally scored in landing the talented 'Flying Gypsyman'. Either way, we win and so will you.
Since most people are visual, we wanted to show what our rewards look like. These do not have our graphics on them. The graphic that we will use on all of them is the super cool Paul Friedrich logo. So try to picture that. We reviewed several different products and felt these were well made and would get good use, rather than just sit in the corner of someone's junk closet (we all have them :) ).
Below are several of John E. Mack's ties to give you an idea of how cool they are.

Wow. The fact that you've made it this far means that you see the potential for a good thing and want to be a part of it. We cannot even tell you how humbled we are. We know that you work hard for your money and it's a big deal to give to a group of guys you may have never even met or heard of before. We can promise that we will work hard for your money too. We believe we have planned well for this and expect things to roll smoothly. Of course, there are several different people and elements involved in a project like this that could add possible delays. Not only do we want this album to sound awesome, which will mean time for recording, mastering and mixing but we also want it to look awesome, which means organzing, editing and printing. And then we have to make sure we have all appropriate rights for tunes someone else wrote.
We appreciate that you have faith in us to come through. We believe this is a partnership between you and us. That means that we will absolutely keep you informed along the way. If there are any delays or hiccups, you won't be left in the dark. Thank you so much for investing in our project!
