We're melting down ice sculptures of the words "Middle Class" at the Republican and Democratic Conventions in Tampa and Charlotte.

-------------------

We have a prime opportunity to put the issue of the disappearing working and middle classes in front of thousands of people and the media.

We make ice sculptures. We put them in public places and then let them melt while we photograph and film them disappearing.

We call them temporary monuments. We created sculptures of Democracy and Economy in 2008, which were seen by thousands.

Now, we’re planning on melting down the words Middle Class in Tampa and Charlotte during the Republican and Democratic Conventions in August and September.

It’s a simple idea, but it’s an unbelievably powerful artwork to witness and expresses a strong message.

This is how we do it:

First we go to the city and find an appropriate location.

In Tampa we’re installing at Lykes Gaslight Park.

In Charlotte, we’ll be doing it at Marshall Park.

Then, with master ice carvers in the location cities, we have them cut the ice to our design specifications.

We made our first ice sculpture with Takeo Okamoto and his son Shintaro in NYC.

Each letter is carved from a block of ice. The entire word can weigh 2000 or more pounds.

On the day of the event, the carvers install the ice words on location, where we set up cameras to film the sculptures as they disintegrate.

It can take anywhere from 4 to 24 hours to melt away. We’re constantly documenting the entire process and then make the media available on a special website.

All the components together make up a social sculpture.

-------------------

We’re doing this Kickstarter because we need your help to realize this project.

• We still need funding for an 8-page color brochure with essays,

• To pay for finishing the project website,

• And to pay for 5 more letters. CLASS

Keep in mind, we’re actually making two eleven-letter sculptures: one in Tampa, one in Charlotte. That’s 22 letters in total, not including the construction of the bases for them.

And most importantly, we need to make this project have as big an impact as possible through you.

You can be  a part of the action by mentioning it on as many blogs, tweets, and social media sites as possible.

Together we can make a powerful, public artwork that expresses the tenor of our times.
