Tasty Minstrel Games is a board game publishing company based in Tucson, AZ started by Michael Mindes in early 2009. Seth Jaffee is Head of Development for Tasty Minstrel. Both have a long-time love of games.
I'm pleased to report that the game was well worth waiting for. Great job, guys -- EmDo is a winner!
I do not feel cheated or a sucker for not getting the copies before the genconers. You have to realize something. The more people see this game and play it, the more popular it will be. The more popular it is, the more likey is that we will get an expansion. We (kickstarters) are still getting it ahead of the public AND we are getting the super secret kickstarter bonus. They certainly didn't make a profit by selling those copies. They broke even if they were lucky. Being at Gencon is very important for giving your game a public eye.
@John: email michael AT tastyminstrelgames DOT com and tell him you need to change your shipping address to whatever the new address is.
Thanks!
How can I change the shipping address?
@Steef: I think your post is misinformed. The only convention the game has been available at was Gen Con. The backers will get their copy as soon as the shipment arrives, and while the delays have been annoying and unexpected, the shipment is finally on the way. While it would be awesome if Toys R' Us would carry our products, it's not likely to happen, and even if it somehow does, it won't happen before backers get their copies.
what conventions will the game be available? I really feel like a sucker. $48 grand from Kickstarter and you sell 150 copies for $6,000 to pay expenses to go to a Con. The only con I see is your company. Backers should really start printing up Sucker stickers for your products. I'll probable see the game in Toys R Us before you send it to the backers.
Thanks, Seth, for taking the time to answer -- I realize how much time you've had to devote to this lately. No one will be happier than you guys when Eminent Domain is in everyone's hands. Keep making good games!
@John: I understand your position, and that of all of our supporters. I would like to note two things though. First of all, I don't think that supporters should feel like suckers - had it not been for supporters then NOBODY would have been picking up a copy at a convention!
Also, rather than looking at it like the kickstarters all got pushed to "the back of the line" - it is more similar to a handful of people being allowed to cut the line. About 150 people total were able to "take cuts" in front of the 1350 kickstarters. Everyone else (3500 people who will eventually get a copy out of the first printing) still has to wait in line behind the Kickstarter supporters!
Some have pointed out that we could have just done demos at the con and not sold copies. Sending a copy home with 150 people (out of the entire world's gaming population) so that they can demo it to their friends - is that really more than demoing the game ourselves to the 36,000 attendees? Not really, just a way to demo to more people, making better use of our limited resources at the con.
There's a cost involved in having a presence at Gen Con - a cost that is not insignificant. Selling 150 copies of EmDo at Gen Con MAYBE covers the cost of going to the show in the first place.
Yeah, I understand the difficult situation, but I also feel just a bit betrayed by the decision to air-ship retail copies to the cons before fulfilling obligations to Kickstarter supporters. I wish TM nothing but the best, but I do feel a bit like a sucker for paying up front when I could have gotten the game sooner by waiting. There probably was no ideal way to handle the shipping delays, but the folks who give you cash up front should always, always be taken care of first if you want people to give you cash up front again next time. Everyone in the gaming world understands shipping delays, and everyone who's been to a convention has seen demo copies for games that are still "on the boat" and not yet for sale. Not everyone will understand paying first to stand at the back of the line.
I am not overwhelmed by a sense of entitlement and I don't think that the designer has done anything wrong. The choices they have made about how to use Kickstarter have just left me with a bad taste in my mouth and wishing I had not pledged.
I've been thinking about your comment Brian. It's your opinion so I won't tell you that you're wrong. My opinion is that Tasty Minstrel is a great company that not only makes great games but really cares about the gamer (their customer). I don't think they've sold out. I think they had plans for things to go one way but 9 months is a long time for things to change. Yeah, I would like the game in my hands today, but the reality is, I have 4 unplayed games in my closet. So, I'm hoping that when Eminent Domain shows up, I'll be ready to get it to the table. I think the really important thing is that TMG has been open, honest, and upfront every step of the way. That makes for a great game company.
I wish you would stop sending apologies/amends. Look, you've decided to sell out. That's fine, many people get that option during life, and everyone has to decide for themselves. There is no debate, no justification, no compensation that changes this fact... just accept it, move on, and stop pretending that we'll still want to shake your hands when we cross paths.
@tiggers - Yes. I figured the exclusivity time of the promo stuff would be short (despite strong wording otherwise) but didn't expect it to actually be a negative number.
I've just read the latest update (#53) and in it you say that EmDo will be available for purchase at GenCon for $40. Is that correct? People who aren't backers will be able to buy and play the product BEFORE the people who backed the project NINE MONTHS AGO! That just isn't right.
Everyone, I'm really sorry about the wait - but the print run of Eminent Domain has finally begun! We'll let you know as soon as we have a firm date on delivery of the games to the U.S.
In the meantime, a Design Diary has been posted on BGG news...
@Matthew: Not too late! email seth AT tastyminstrelgames DOT com and let me know your dropbox email - I'll hook you up with an invite.
Is it too late to be added to the Dropbox? I am an original backer.
I'm not sure why my friend Rob Sinkko is listed first on the list, since I think it's alphabetical, but I believe all the names I submitted are correct.
We were shooting for an April release, but after all of the usual setbacks and delays, now that the files are at the printer it's looking like late May at best. The good news is that there should be no more delays, the manufacturer has begun manufacturing!
When is the ETA to send out the copies to the Kick-starter backers?
Have you already made plans for those 321 remaining limited edition boxes? (I'm looking at that $90 pledge)
@Matthew: Well, the kickstarter campaign is over, but thanks for the vote of confidence! The games should be available in April, so you can "pledge" at that time by buying one!
:)
- Seth
I'd love to be able to pledge...
Bummed I missed the deadline on this one....
I'm afraid I've discontinued the PnP file sharing while we get the illustration done to get the game out. Thank you for your interest, and I look forward to getting this game out to you guys soon!
Seth Jaffee any chance of sending me an invites to join the DropBox folder for a PnP
When should we have the names into you by? I'm currently on vacation and can't contact the other people who joined with me for the 6 games we ordered.
Hmm, it won't let me continue.
Address Line 2, 2nd, and 3rd supporter names, and the email address aren't filled out. Seems like all should be optional.
Could I get a print and play file?
I did the $90 support option.
Thank you,
Stephen S.

Congratulations on one hell of a kickstarter project!
Nevermind. I saw the exchange below.
So when do we let you guys know how we want our name for the rulebook? I go by middle name and just want to be sure my name is shown as I like it.
Congrats, Seth and Michael! Seems like a smashing success!
How exactly will the shipping information be collected? Although I used a credit card with an American billing address, I am going to need to have the games I ordered shipped to Japan (yes I did pay for int'l shipping!)
I was trying to make the point that having the information here, rather than having to go elsewhere, is more convenient. It wasn't intended as a flame.
Also boardgamegeek.com may not have anything to do with Kickstarter, but it has everything to do with this game as that is where the initial marketing was done to get people onto the kickstarter page. If you are interested in this project, or already a backer, and you have not been to BGG.com before I highly recommend checking it out. You'll find lots of other info about the game, a gameplay video, and questions and discussions in the forums as well. It's very helpful.
And Adrian: now the answer is here. You're welcome!
John,
Yes, thank you. I was indeed trying to be helpful by citing a source, not be snippy by implying you should have known that info. Guess it's hard to communicate tone in an internet post. Who'd have thunk, eh? :)
WOW, Adrian, set flame off. I don't think that Isaiah was quoting "Board Game Geek" to say you should go there for answers. I believe he quoted "Board Game Geek" to site the source of the answer he posted. - - Dr. Meredith: "Always... no, no... never... forget to check your references." (Real Genius 1985)
Isaiah: So what if it's "answered in a recent post on Board Game Geek"? The answer should be here, not on a website that has nothing to do with kickstarter.
Sorry, in the book. Not the box. :)
Ken, this was answered in a recent post on Board Game Geek: all of the names will be put on the box. Someone will contact you at some point with a request for all the names.
Let's say my friends and I do the $150 level. Whose name gets put in the book? Or do we get to add all of our names?
What would be nice is if there was something unique added to these Kickstarter copies that will never be available thru an expansion, etc.
Knowing that you don't want to chew up the pledge $ on this, I understand it is a bit of a challenge. But, smart folks may come up with something. Maybe a few alternate technologies or some tokens / markers?
Craig, there are TWO different rewards at the $200 level. One that lets you name a Technology card. (SOLD OUT) The other lets you name a Planet card. (ONLY 7 LEFT)
So there are a total of 791 Limited Edition copies? 41 go to the $200+ backers (don't know why there are two of them, 26 & 15), and 750 go to the $90 backers (3 each x 250)? Or is will be an even 800 floating around?
@Seth: Not sure why my e-mail was eating the invites, but the other e-mail account worked fine. I have printed the game and am eagerly looking forward to trying it out! Thanks!
@Nathan: I have sent you multiple invites to join the DropBox folder where the prototype files reside. Check your spam folder, maybe emails from DropBox have been considered spam by your filters? I sent another invite just now (that would be #3 - I have receieved 2 emails from you on Nov 10 and Nov 12, and sent a DropBox invite each time).
I would really love to get the PnP files before my game group on Thursday, so I can try and get some of the guys to go in with me on the Limited Edition copies... How can I get access to the PnP files? I have sent 4 e-mails to seth@tastyminstrelgames.com at this point and have not received any response. :(
Hey! it removed the < cue sound of whip cracking > part.
