About this project
The Last Night of the Barbary Coast is very loosely based on the family legend of Director Jessa Brie Berkner's great-great-aunt Babe as she fled Meaderville, Montana, joined a Vaudeville troupe, and headed West.
The play’s story follows the archetypal and mythical structure of the tarot, or hero’s journey, as our heroine encounters the trials and tribulations of the Wild West from a young woman’s perspective.
Played out atop our stage, which will actually be a giant, rotating Roulette Wheel, Babe encounters Magicians and Devils, Madames and Cowboys, Miners and Whores on her harrowing journey against a backdrop of an original score by composer Freddi Price, performed with a live orchestra. Elements of choice and chance, destiny and fate, and the rise and fall of fortune figure prominently throughout the show.
Using a devised theatre process, our performers and design team are all in collaboration around these themes, creating a strong visual and musical landscape for the story. The actors and musicians have been collaborating and rehearsing for several months, and the set designers are hard at work making our one-of-a-kind stage a reality.
We have secured the amazing theater space at SOMARTS in San Francisco, and are very excited to bring this massive production to life there.
We need a bit of help covering costs of the production of the Roulette Wheel stage, and musical direction. The entire cast and crew continue to give many volunteer hours to this effort. A successful kickstarter campaign would make a big difference to us!
