An original side-scrolling beat ‘em up with deep roots in classic 8- and 16-bit titles, robust level design, and innovative gameplay.
Snodown is a game for anyone who grew up playing the classics, and has done their fair share of growing up since then. All of us here on the development team have fond memories of our favorite titles, and want to recreate those memories for new players, while saying something meaningful and creating fresh and fun game mechanics for longtime players.
It's not about us. Above all, we want to create experiences that endure.
We know exactly what we want to do, but don't quite have the means to do it. Securing funding from Kickstarter would mean transforming Snodown from a nights-and-weekends project into a part-time job for many of the team members, and being able to put in the time we need to finish this game.
It means we could release Snodown in March of 2013, instead of who-knows-when.
But that's only in the short-term. In the long-term, successfully releasing Snodown could jump-start many careers, or even give us the funds we need to become a full-time studio. Contributing to this project means you would be helping our team members achieve their dreams!
We'll be sending out a survey at the end of our Kickstarter campaign to collect all the necessary information from all of you - shipping address if you ordered a box copy, screen resolution, etc.
Note that all rewards are cumulative up to $150, but not beyond. If you choose the $500 reward tier, you'll receive everything through the Special Edition Box + Manual, as well as a statue in your honor.
Credits ($1): Everyone who contributes to this project is a part of the team that made it happen, and deserves recognition. If you donate any amount, your name will be listed in a "backers" section of the credits for Snodown!
The Game ($8): The game itself will be available for digital download across a number of platforms (an executable, Chrome Store, HTML5, Facebook, potentially OUYA and Steam), and you get to choose which one you want it on!
Wallpaper ($13): The set will include multiple wallpaper images, which will come in all common screen sizes.
The Soundtrack ($18): The soundtrack will be available for digital download, and all tracks will be .mp3.
Concept Art Collection ($25): The collection will include early sketches, as well as detailed pieces of concept art of most characters and locations. You'll receive pretty much every piece of concept art Nate and Wil draw!
The Community ($45): One of the big things we want to do is create a relationship with our community beyond what many studios have. We'll invite everyone to their own set of backer-only forums, share demos with you over the next few months, Hangout on Google+ and talk about the game, and ask for you all to weigh in on design questions ("should Sam have an ability in which he catches a snowball and throws it back, or one in which he shoots a watergun to create ice and trip his enemies?"). We'll also make video updates and podcasts just for you guys!
Special Thanks Credits ($60): As the game starts up, before you see the title screen, players will see a special thanks screen that lists everyone who contributes at least this much!
The Special Edition Boxed Game ($100): This is a reward to put on display! The game will come on a custom-printed CD inside of a DVD case with a color cover and inside slip. The soundtrack will come in its own CD case, also with color printing. It'll also include an exclusive signed art print! Below are some mock-ups of what you can expect these to roughly look like, but are NOT final versions.
The Special Edition Boxed Game + Instruction Manual ($150):Your Special Edition boxed copy will additionally include an instruction manual. The manual will be full color, with a slight sheen, and share gameplay tips, concept art, and story details that you might not find in the game itself!
Name & Likeness ($200): Five of Cody's old Snodown teammates have been captured by Diesel, and are rescued over the course of the game. Additionally, they give Cody tips on how to discover some of the hidden areas where Diesel's Dirtbags are waiting for him, and serve him hot cocoa to keep him warm! Send us first name and a picture, and we'll design one of them after you!
Billboard or Storefront ($250): Got your own indie studio, or business? If you contribute $250, we'll put up a sign or storefront of it in-game! At the end of the campaign, we'll send out a survey in which we ask for the name of your business, a logo, whether you'd like a billboard or storefront, and a picture of the store, if necessary.
NOTE: All submissions must be kid-friendly and kept strictly PG.
Town Founder Statue ($500): Cody and Sam will return to the Town Square after they venture out to one of the levels around town. The Square is their main base of operations, and will get a solid amount of exposure over the course of the game. Four statues of the town's founders will be clearly placed for all to see. If you select this reward, we'll design one using your name, likeness, and give it whatever pose you want us to!
School Name ($1,000): All the kids in the game attend the same middle school, which serves as both the first and last level of the game. If you select this reward, we'll name the middle school after you! More specifically, we'll use your last name. If two individuals select this reward, the school with have a hyphenated name (e.g., if John Doe and Joe Schmoe each contribute $1,000, it will be named the Doe-Schmoe Middle School. Order of names will be alphabetical).
Lifetime Award ($2,000): First off, there's our eternal love, which you can't really put a price on. But in all seriousness, anyone who contributes this amount will have played a crucial role in helping us release our first title and start down the path to become a full-time studio, and deserves to play all our games for free for life.

Every winter the students have an enormous school-wide snowball tournament: the Schoolyard Snodown. Cody, champion for two years straight, is about to finish his last year at the school. This time around, he has decided that he's too cool for snowball fighting. He's mellowed out, grown up, and even has a cute girlfriend now – Ashley. They held hands once. Maybe. It's middle school.
As the snow begins to fall, preparations begin. Alliances are formed, and territories throughout the neighborhood are quickly established. The less ambitious and, frankly, weaker groups stick closer to the school, but the bravest of the brave stretch as far out as the amusement park and the frozen lake. Meanwhile, Cody drops off all his old snowball fighting gear in the school’s lost and found. Diesel – the leader of the most notorious gang, the Blizzard Bulldozers – has been training for years after being defeated by Cody in their first year, while Diesel was still just a lowly henchman. Since then, he has worked his way up from grunt to bully to mid-boss to gang leader status. Infuriated by the news of Cody's retirement, he plans a plan and schemes a scheme to bully the other gangs into kidnapping Cody's girl and old Snodown allies, and force Cody into the Snodown.
Cody is furious when he finds out, but still reluctant to participate in Diesel’s challenge. He opts instead to tell the kids’ parents, but his younger brother, Sam, interrupts and presents him with his old goggles. They've been locked away in the attic, but rescued and even enhanced a little by Sam. Through a surge of nostalgia or sudden desire to repair his damaged pride, Cody sets out (with his little brother tagging along behind him) to once again claim the title of champion! . . . and save Ashley, too.
But when they get back to the lost and found, they find that Diesel has already taken Cody's gear and distributed it to the Bulldozers! Cody and Sam will have to travel to each gang’s territory and defeat each gang’s leader to rescue his friends, and retrieve his old gear along the way. Eventually, they'll make their way to the final Snodown, where they’ll face off with Diesel.
We're targeting the OUYA and a number of PC platforms for Schoolyard Snodown's release! Additionally, the tool we’re using to build the game – Construct 2 – is flexible enough to allow us to publish to pretty much any platform we want to (except in the console space). If you guys show a real desire to play Snodown on a particular platform, we will do everything we can to release it there!
Here's a list of a couple PC platforms we're currently targeting, but the list will surely be much longer in the end:
- Direct Download from our website
- The Google Chrome Store
Snodown belongs on the OUYA! The console is blasting open the floodgates for developers to release their titles for the big screen, a space that's otherwise been hard to break into. We're in the process of setting this up, and hope to report back with good news, soon.
Steam, on the other hand, will be a harder platform to break into. We have a Greenlight page, and if Snodown is something you'd like to see on Steam, please share and support us on Greenlight!
But this list isn't final! Construct 2 gives us tons of platform flexibility. If there's a particular place you'd like to be able to play Snodown, let us know! You name it, we can probably publish to it. Our goal is to get Snodown onto the platforms you guys want to play it on, so if we hear that there's a lot of demand for a particular platform, we'll do everything we can to get it there.
It's a Two-Way Street: Player Engagement
We reject the idea that a studio should secure a buncha money, retreat into their development cave, and emerge some time later with a finished game.
Our goal is to create an environment in which communication between the team and our community is a two-way street. We want our players to feel that they are free to contribute and that their voices are heard. The team will share ideas with the community, promote a culture of transparency, and accept constructive criticism. We want our players to connect with the team and feel invested in our projects, and the team should in turn feel responsible for presenting a polished and professional product.
While the players are welcome and encouraged to participate in every step of the development process, from concept to testing to post-release, it's important that we maintain a strong team identity and define an emotional, narrative, or experiential core for each project. As developers, we want to offer something unique to the players: we are willing to modify ideas that aren’t fun or engaging, or even scrap concepts that are not well received. A positive relationship between us and the community is the bottom line. Even when community input is not directly solicited, we hope to create an environment that encourages community members to be invested in the creative content we produce.
The Nitty-Gritty: Budget, Schedule, & Design Doc
We understand that many of you need to see more than an idea before you contribute to a project, and we couldn't agree more. To that end, we're making a version of our budget and parts of our design doc public for all to see. Check them out here! If you have any questions about an item on any of these documents, don't hesitate to contact us!
Beyond 100% Funded
The nature of this project and our time constraints prevent us from putting in much additional time after our launch window (March) until summer, which is why we aren't offering stretch goals - that's too long to ask all of you to wait.
However, you can be certain that funds we raise in excess of our target will go towards our next title - whether it's Snodown+, or something else completely original - and you can be sure that we'll be talking to our fans before we decide what project to tackle next!
We can't begin to express how thankful we are for all the support we've received. Having the opportunity to present Snodown to the rest of the world has been an incredible experience. We're looking forward to sharing the finished version of the game with all of you next March!

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Time is the primary constraint for Schoolyard Snodown. We have the team, we have the vision, and with a successful Kickstarter we'll have the funds. But considering every team member either works full-time or is a full-time student, the primary risk to the project is that one of our team members simply won't have the time to complete their assignments.
This risk should be largely mitigated by a successful Kickstarter. Securing funding means paid team members, which in turn means that team members can afford to put more time towards the project.
Additionally, we've been very conservative in building our budget and schedule. For any given task, we took the high-end estimate of how long it should take to complete. When each team member estimated how much time they'll be able to contribute to the project, we took the low-end estimate. We also purposefully built in contingency time to ensure we'll be able to finish what we've started.
We're much more likely to find ourselves with extra time towards the end of the project, which we'll be able to use to further polish and refine Snodown.
