About this project

Kenny Roby 2012 Album

PLEASE SEE THE UPDATE FURTHER DOWN THIS PAGE

This is the first Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for the recording and recording associated costs for the new Kenny Roby album. Our goal is (was!) to raise $2000 to get the ball rolling faster in the early part of the recording process. All of the songs for the album are written (although brand new songs may be recorded if written during the time of the sessions)

We have already recorded a few songs and some basic tracks and will be going into the studio the weekend of 1/15/12 but would like to keep momentum once we get going. So we are shooting for raising the $2000 in the next 15 days. 15 days isn't long so please spread the word to all of your friends on Facebook, Twitter, your blogs and mailing lists.

To hear an early mix of The Short Mile from the new album go to http://www.kennyroby.net/ and click on the Listen page or via Soundcloud at http://soundcloud.com/kenny-roby

Kickstarter policystates that we will not receive your donation nor will you be charged the amount of your pledge unless we reach our goal by the deadline of our campaign. Your credit or debit card will be charged when we have met our goal by the deadline.

If we exceed our goal then any amout over will be used for the recording, mixing, mastering, manufacturing or promotion of the new album.

UPDATE! WE HAVE REACHED OUR GOAL IN LESS THAN 24 HOURS!

Incredible. Thank you all so much for helping to make this album a reality. We cannot close this campaign down before the deadline.

Studio time in a professional studio is usually at least $400 - 600 dollars a day. We are recording in professional studios as well as in our home studios so that keeps our costs down somewhat. If we put the album out as a self-release (which will most likely happen at least in most countries) we will need to pay for mixing, mastering, manufacturing, artwork and early promotion etc..Our intial goal was to raise the first $2,000 for early recording costs and then do another campaign in the near future for other recording and manufacturing costs, but due to your overwhelming generosity we achieved that in less than 24 hours!  We have decided to go ahead and use this campaign to fund the project as a whole as much as possible in the next 14 days before the dealine. Any little bit helps and of course we don't expect to fund the whole project here. We have and will continue to fund the project out of pocket, with your help and through playing music live. Please continue to spread the word!

Thank you all again.

Kenny Roby is an American singer, songwriter and performer based out of Raleigh, NC. Roby, the former leader and writer for the Americana outfit Six String Drag (at one time produced and signed to Steve Earle and Jack Emerson’s E- Squared Records) has released three solo albums and is currently working on his fourth. His first solo effort Mercury’s Blues, a more sparse and pop leaning album than the 6 String Drag records was released in 1999/2000 on RiceBox Records in the US and Glitterhouse in Europe. Roby toured in the US and Europe with Scott Miller (of The V-Roys), Cary Hudson (of Blue Mountain), Neal Casal (of Ryan Adams and The Cardinals and The Chris Robinson Brotherhood) and others in support of the record and gained a solid fanbase throughout these areas.
In 2001 Roby released the Rather Not Know record (Morebarn Records). A reflective record of life and loss, Rather Not Know was loved by many who had felt loss of a loved one and gained praise by the likes of artists such as Ryan Adams who chose to play the title track on NPR’s All Song Considered. Ryan is a longtime fan of Kenny’s and has never hesitated to sing the praises of Roby’s songwriting. A few years after Rather Not Know’s release, Ryan mentioned Kenny Roby in Rolling Stone as the best songwriter that not enough people have heard yet. Roby’s music has been praised in pages of Billboard, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Boston Phoenix, The Washington Post, Option, No Depression, Performing Songwriter, Rolling Stone and many other publications.
From 2004 to 2005 Roby recorded and released The Mercy Filter on Pulp Recordings. The record was a collection of songs with the theme of reconciliation and recovery of life and relationships. If Rather Not Know was the closest solo release to his past roots rock stylings, The Mercy Filter was the furthest away from them. Recorded by The Houston Brothers, Justin and Matt Faircloth, The Mercy Filter Roby dipped more towards his pop influences of The Beatles, The Pixies, The Replacements, Elvis Costello and even Roby’s childhood favorites the Bad Brains and Prince. The record was harder hitting at times and more pop and unconventional and experimental as well compared to the more roots rock sounds of Rather Not Know and the Six String Drag records.
The new album, tentatively titled The Fault may be Roby’s deepest and darkest output yet. He drops into a softer and lower tone than most previous efforts on these songs and couples his voice and characters with thick and sparse arrangements. This cast of characters could be living among us or in times dating back as far as the early 1900’s. If it weren’t for a few modern references to cars and such they could inhabit even earlier times. They include the spouse of a returned war veteran, a semi-broken husband who can’t explain his darkness and depression to his wife, a character wondering what he will do when he is left alone to his own vices and devices, a murderous couple who only “love” each other when they need each other’s “help”, an unrequited teenage lover, an aging boxer, and a young rural boy with his view of his dark and small town. The album almost leans towards southern gothic stories and characters although the sound is not specifically southern. The sound and story could just as easily be set in a northern or western region. The album should not sound old nor retro either. It will be very much a modern record but the characters as stated could be from any number of locations or time periods.
Much of the record is being recorded and mixed by Jason Merritt. Jason a recent transplant to North Carolina from Los Angeles has engineering, 2nd engineer and mixing credits for projects by Tift Merritt (no relation), Chatham County Line, My Morning Jacket, Dr. Dre, Mary J. Blige, G Unit, Paul Westerburg and many more) The songs include playing and some recording by Kenny, long-time musical partner Scott McCall (Tift Merritt, Two Dollar Pistols), Jason Merritt, David “DK” Kim and Shawn Lynch. (DK played drums on most of The Mercy Filter record and Shawn joined in on it as well on guitar and keyboards on a few songs.
This record should not only appeal to the scourers of the roots music and singer/songwriter bins but as much to fans of Nick Cave, The National, Arcade Fire, Ryan Adams, Wilco, Bon Iver and Iron and Wine. Roby would fit well sharing a stage with any and all of these types. Great songs are great songs no matter what the genre card they are sold under. And Kenny Roby has great songs in spades.
