Seven Towers In A Row

Update #13 · May 16, 2012 · 15 comments

Below are the 6 Hardwood towers and a 3mm Ply.

Today I realized I haven't made any Dice Towers from MDF recently. I did most of my prototyping in MDF so I took it for granted.

The towers are ordered from Left to Right:

  • 3mm Ply
  • Poplar
  • Aromatic Cedar
  • Red Oak
  • Macacuba
  • Walnut
  • Padauk

Check out the pictures from the link below for higher resolution and more angles. All towers will have the side window design seen on the Poplar and Aromatic Cedar.

Poplar is on the list!

Update #12 · May 16, 2012 · 4 comments

Hi Everyone!

I am happy to say poplar has made the list! I wanted to get a light colored wood option for you.

So the final hardwood options are:

  • Padauk
  • Red Oak
  • Macacuba
  • Walnut
  • Aromatic Cedar
  • Poplar

Thanks everyone for your support. I am so excited there are others out there enjoying dice towers as much as I do.

Dice Bags and Aromatic Cedar!

Update #11 · May 15, 2012 · 10 comments

Hi Everyone!

I wanted to give you more information on the dice bag. You will get to choose your favorite color when the survey goes out. The default color will be black. Check out the slide below for all the details...

Great news! The aromatic cedar cuts like a dream... and smells amazing! It is easy to work with too! I am not going to seal the aromatic cedar so the aroma can be enjoyed. I did try applying linseed oil on the prototype and it looks great but too close to Padauk. Also, the linseed finish overwhelms the cedar. Since the aroma is what makes this hardwood, I want that to be enjoyed first. Check out the first Unique Dice Tower made in Aromatic Cedar below!

Progress...

Update #10 · May 14, 2012 · 6 comments

I want to let everyone know what has been going on the last week and what I have planned for this week.

I have had more growing pains than expected with the new laser cutter but I almost have a grip on it. There were a few times the breaker blew and a lot of unnecessary smoke was generated due to focus issues. Towers are cut much faster on the new machine. I am expecting to receive another part this week which will finish off the new laser cutter setup and allow me to work more often.

With the new laser cutter and wood prep, I have a lot more stuff in my workspace and it is making moving around inefficient, so I spent most of today rearranging and junking old projects that weren’t going anywhere.

I almost qualified Yellowheart but twice now it has been too hard to work. It breaks on the grain way too easy. Unfortunately it can work but requires too much attention.

Aromatic Cedar and Poplar are the last two woods I have to check out. The cedar looked great once linseed oil was applied BUT it picked up a reddish color which makes it look similar to padauk so I am thinking to offer it unfinished because it has such a nice smell (and it looks different unfinished).

The final hardwood options are:
-Padauk
-Red Oak
-Macacuba
-Walnut
-Aromatic Cedar
-Poplar

Thanks for your suggestions regarding a higher tier hardwood option. I am reluctant to add woods I haven’t worked with especially having such difficulty with the yellowheart.

Thanks everyone for your continued interest!

-John
