Kickstarter

       My project is called "Don't Be Afraid."  It's a children's book to help raise awareness that Firefighters, EMT's and Paramedics are there to help in stressful situations. The story and colorful illustrations allow for children see and understand the gear and tools emergency workers use.  As an EMT I have seen many things I wish I hadn't.  It's just the nature of the job.  Sometimes our emergency calls involve children.  Whether it be a car accident, fire, or other type of emergency - its all very scary to a child.

      I've heard of many instances over the years where children will hide from emergency workers in fear during an emergency.  Our gear, and tools can be very intimidating to adults, let alone children.  When a child hides or acts out defensively from fear, it could (and has) cost them their life.

     With the book "Don't Be Afraid" I hope to help educate preschool and elementary aged children, that it is OK to be nervous, but not to hide from emergency workers.  The book explains how firefighters are dressed, what they sound like and look like.  It also explains what type of tools they may have with them, as some of them are intimidating.  The book also explains what an EMT or Paramedic do.  It goes over all of the tools medical personnel may need.  Backboards, collars, bandages and splints are often very scary to a child.  They can sometimes think this stuff will hurt them.  Especially when they are separated from Mom and Dad.  "Don't Be Afraid" can help make children understand the process during an emergency, which will make it a little less stressful for them.

     My goal is to raise $7500.00 to assist with artwork, and to cover the costs of the first print run of 2000 books.  I believe this book should wind up in every school around the world eventually, but we will start small.  The first 2000 books will be saved and given to any Kickstarter backers that make a pledge of $50 or more.  Any extra books will be donated to various elementary schools, and fire departments to ensure they are used for educating kids.

     If this campaign is successful, I plan to continue producing "Don't Be Afraid" until all children have had a chance to read it.  I believe in the book, and the message it sends to our children.  Please help support us!!!
