About this project

Steel Toe Review is an online literary magazine that features contemporary fiction and poetry. STR is based in Birmingham, Alabama, and gives special treatment to Southern writers and Southern themes, but it is open to any writing of quality. STR also publishes essays, plays, and creative non-fiction, as well as visual art.

The first issue of STR went online in November 2010. To celebrate our first year online, we are printing an anthology featuring the best pieces we've published so far. The anthology will also include illustrations by Birmingham artists. The impetus behind STR, generally, is to connect Birmingham writers and artists with a community of writers, artists, and like-minded people elsewhere. The print anthology will further that goal by, literally, putting our work in peoples' hands.
