From the hills of western NC to the streets of Brooklyn, we’d like to share our love of clogging & its rich southern history with you.
Please help us transport this project to New York. Your support will help cover our travel expenses, stage production and our clogging gear.
I am currently working on a series of projects that examine my life growing up in the South. One of my more striking experiences of southerness was from the ages of 7 to13; I was a clogger. I spent six years of my life in clogging shoes, practicing routines and performing in Dollywood. Since then my clogging has been kept a secret, with the occasional exception of late night entertainment for friends. These early experiences clogging on stage, no doubt, contribute to my work as a performance artist.
For many years I have wanted to incorporate clogging into one of my performances, and recently I found partner in crime. While working with artist Jimmy O’Neal we discovered our shared southern roots in clogging. As children raised in Georgia and Tennessee we were both taught the traditional southern folk dance with roots in Appalachia. Our mutual discovery was immediately followed by an impromptu clog.
For the Dumbo Arts Festival 2012, Jimmy and I are creating a migratory clogging performance. We will build portable wooden platforms to carry on our backs and use as stages, much like those used at bluegrass festivals. We will perform choreographed routines on the streets of Dumbo and share the basics of clogging with the festival audience, infusing a small piece of southern tradition into Brooklyn.
