Get to know Patricia

Hi, my name is Patricia Caicedo, my mission as a singer is to preserve and internationally promote the Latin American and Spanish art song repertoire, its composers and poets.

My interest in this repertory began in my native Colombia during my training as a classical singer. While a classically trained musician's studies follow a strictly Euro-centric model based in the study of German, Italian and French repertoire, my teacher broke with tradition and taught me Latin American art songs. Once exploring this repertoire, I found a connection with Latin American folk music - it was the intersection of classical repertoire and folklore - with which I feel a strong identification.

I subsequently began to look for art songs by Latin American composers but ran into many obstacles, the first of which was the fact that these songs could not be found in music stores. Over time I discovered that these songs were often not published or that they are now out of print, which makes them especially difficult to find.

I started including these songs in my concert programs and proposed programs made-up exclusively of this repertory. However, I encountered resistance from programmers, some of whom suggested that I sing traditional Lied by European composers. It seemed that Latin American art songs were not considered to be on the same level as traditional lieder!

I then began my "detective" work searching for songs in family records, libraries of various countries and by contacting composers or their descendants directly.

I am driven by the desire to make the repertoire known and to help it achieve its rightful place in an international context. I consider this my mission.

To date I have recorded five CDs dedicated to the Latin American Repertoire, I have published three books, which are now considered reference books in the field, and I am the founder and director of the Barcelona Festival of Song; a Summer Course and concert series dedicated to the study of this wonderful repertoire.

As a musicologist, I am an expert in the history and musical interpretation of this vocal repertoire. Besides performing I often serve as a teacher giving concert-lectures, master classes, and serving as Artist-in-Residence at universities in the United States and as Cultural Ambassador for the Colombian  and Spanish Diplomatic Corps.

You can find more information about me and my work in my website www.patriciacaicedo.com . You can also go to www.mundoartstv.com and watch some of my performances. In those sites you will be able to hear songs, watch videos, interviews and even become my fan ;)

What is an art song?

People often ask me what I’m talking about when I’m referring to Latin-American art song, so let me explain it: an art song is a composition for voice and piano or voice and guitar in which the composer sets to music poetry, usually by a great poet.

The origins of the genre originate from 19th century Germany where composers such as Schubert and Schumann were writing Lieder (lit. songs) for piano and solo voice. The “Lieder” style was lyrical and stressed the link between poetic texts and their musical setting.  It soon spread worldwide.

Latin American composers quickly learnt about this and began composing in the lieder style, with a difference: Latin American composers were writing in a socio-cultural context being shaped by profoundly nationalistic social trends and a fertile musical renaissance was spread throughout the Americas.

If you like to learn about the Latin-American Art Song repertoire and its composers please read the following article DISCOVERING LATIN-AMERICAN SOUL TROUGH SONG AND POETRY, written by Patricia Caicedo and published in the January-February 2012 issue of VoicePrints the publication of the New York Singing Teachers Association.

Why is it important to bring to light this music?

This project deepens the knowledge of culturally significant Hispanic poetry and music for current and future generations to appreciate and enjoy. These recordings will be the result of professional research and meticulous training on my part, collaborative partnerships, and the artistic genius of Latino composers and writers.

This project will call attention to this unique repertoire in the realm of music pedagogy. Within this community, the recordings will have a ripple effect - reaching more and more throughout teachers, musicians, and listeners.

In addition, the rescue, preservation and promotion of this important repertoire is of social benefit to all ethnicities, as all will be able to appreciate and learn about Hispanic artistic creations, specifically music and poetry. This project is unique because it mainly involves songs that have never been recorded before or works that are hardly known, despite their great artistic value.

But of course, this project is important because it will bring to light BEAUTIFUL SONGS!

  • A big part of the money is going to pay for recording studio time at a great studio with a great concert piano. Other important part of the money goes to graphic design, royalties, duplication and musician´s fees. There are other minor expenses related with sheet music copies and mailing from different countries

Connected as Patricia Caicedo (5064 friends)

Recognized as “The Voice of the Latin American and Spanish Art Song” and often described as its ambassador, Colombian-Spanish soprano and musicologist Patricia Caicedo positioned herself as a leading interpreter of the Latin American and Spanish vocal repertory and has sung in the United States, Canada, Denmark, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Russian, Puerto Rico and Latin-America to public and critical acclaim.

Singing in Spanish, Catalan, Portuguese, Quechua and Nahuatl she draws listeners into the world of beauty, poetry, and warmth that is the Latin American & Spanish Art Song – a world that continues to thrive because of her determination to ensure its future. As one reviewer noted, “Reflecting her deep emotional connection to the music, she interprets the repertory with extraordinary sensitivity and sweetness.”

She has recorded five CDs dedicated to the Latin American Art Song --"Aves y Ensueños - Colombian Art Songs by Jaime León" (2011), "Estrela é Lua nova..." (2011), -"De mi corazón latino" (2010), “To My Native City” (2005) and “ Lied:Art Songs of Latin America” (2001)-- has collaborated on other CDs. All are available for purchase on this website.

As a musicologist and teacher Caicedo is internationally recognized as the leading expert in the study and performance of the Latin American & Spanish art song, a tradition she has almost single-handedly rescued from extinction. Her pioneering books The Latin American Art Song: A Critical Anthology and Interpretive Guide for Singers and The Colombian Art Song - Jaime León: Analysis and Compilation of his works for voice & piano Vol.1 & 2. are consider reference books in the field.

She is the founder and artistic director of the Barcelona Festival of Song, a Summer Program and concert series focused on the study of the history and interpretation of the Latin American & Spanish Art Song repertoire, an event that will be reaching its 8th edition in 2012.

Born in Ibagué, Colombia, Patricia began studying piano, music theory, and voice as a child at the Tolima music conservatory; then continued with private instructors in Bogotá. After completing medical studies in Bogotá, she resumed her voice studies and has since worked with Rocío Rios, Alfredo Krauss, Maya Maiska and Gilberto Escobar.

With her talent, knowledge, and determination to preserve an important part of the world’s musical heritage, Patricia Caicedo is indeed The Voice of the Latin American & Spanish Art Song.
