$1mm in 28 hours

Update #2 · Apr 12, 2012 · 90 comments

It's tough posting about this without using too many superlatives, but I'll try my best.

Pebble just hit $1mm; roughly 28 hours after Engadget broke the story.

You, our backers, have transformed our little project into a worldwide phenomenon. My team and I can't thank you enough. Just want to let you know that we're laser-focused on getting this watch onto your wrist as soon as possible.

We'll have a more complete update coming later today with some answers to questions, new milestones and some pretty awesome news!

Watch out for that!

I am not a big fan of inductive charging, it is not an environmentally friendly solution, but that doesn't mean we have to do without an elegant bedside stand/charger. I hope you are considering a stand that makes contact with the charging pins. Like the Galaxy Nexus desktop stand except maybe you'll actually deliver it ;-)

    3. Missing_small

Creator mark waller on April 15, 2012

A better idea - build the inductive charge loop into the STRAP. That way, you get to sell higher-value straps to those who want that feature. That gets around the space limitations inside the watch itself and the strap makes a nice loop to contain the inductive charge receptor.

    4. Fb_profile_picture.small

Creator Alex Johnson on April 14, 2012

induction charging isn't free - you need a special charger, and you have to build the power receptor inside the watch, and that takes a LOT of space. much more than a custom USB port (or even a standard miniUSB port. not to mention that while induction charging is "sexy new technology" it's also really wasteful loss of energy: the power that needs to be pulled from the service line is higher than just a straight connection.

Q: can you pair the pebble watch to more than one device at a time?

    6. Bsa_roadshow_128x128.small

Creator Jim Millard on April 13, 2012

Others have said it: inductive charging. Eliminates the need for the custom USB port, which should make the industrial design for waterproofing that much easier (or lower depth). An optional BT dongle for non-charging communication with non-BT devices would be the final piece to the puzzle.

Some of us aren't here because of engadget (I don't read it) but because we supported you from the very beginning with the inPulse; and we did that because you're doing what the large companies won't - innovate.

      Could not say any better!

This is absolutely brilliant. I'm just so thankful to engadget for covering this, else I would never have come across this true modern masterpiece. Happy to have pledged and can't wait when this arrives.

      I'm blown away by this.

I've been telling Sony to get back into bed with Fossil to produce a watch worthy of their original MBW-150, which I still wear every day. It has a cheap OLED screen that dies after about 6 months, and I've gone through 4 of them because there is literally nothing else out there that does what I wanted.

Then you guys rock up with my perfect watch and BOOM - $130 in your pocket, and one very happy customer. Can't wait to get it - you've done something special here guys... all power to you.

Guys this is going to be a wonderful product. With so much backing (including mine) you should take your time and put out a quality device.
I love the concept and now the fact that i'll be able to leave it on swimming is a real bonus.
Looking forward to being on of the first in Australia to own one. All the best for the next few months ahead :)

keep in mind that they won't receive any of the funding till at least a month maybe two after the funding is complete. as of right now they are a couple months away from getting any funds, but I hoping like the others we can see this watch turn into something really bad A$$ congrats I can't wait to get one.

@ Quentin: shouldn't be a problem since the purchases are for another device. There are apps with stores already (steam, amazon.)

Creator Richard Goodwin on April 12, 2012

Seconding an earlier question about the cable... The "special USB cable" scares me. What happens when (not if) we lose it, or travel w/o it, etc? Can you standardize on Micro-USB?

    22. Missing_small

Some ideas for saving battery life. You have an acceleration meter, so why not turn off visual functions when the watch hasn't moved for a while (when we sleep for example) and turn them on when its moved? Would it be feasible to incorporate discrete solar collector to boost battery life (my cheap $60 Casio does). How about a small light that comes on for a few seconds when you move your wrist in the dark so you can read the time at night?

The in app - app store seems like a bottleneck on iOS. Can you tell us how you will provide something like that around Apple's TOS?

I'm a developer who missed out on the 100 dev watches. Any chance of a second round?

Do you already have tentative approval from apple for your "in-app app store" will apps be for sale via IAP?
