Going digital with our award-winning time capsule about Italian immigrants in rural Pennsylvania in the 19'70's: a by-gone culture.
Long ago in the '90's (when indy movies were still made on film), we made this unique, 50 minute doc as a labor of love. It was edited and re-imagined from original footage shot in the early '70's on historic Kodak black & while reversal film. With it, my brother Michael, who directed, and I won awards for directing, writing and sound design (Hal Levinsohn, sound editor) at the Chicago International Film Festival, then enjoyed a handsome PBS release in many states across the nation. Special showings of the film were presented at the Tribeca Film Center in New York, and were used to benefit the Allegheny Valley Hospital Foundation in Western Pa. An original 16 mm print of the film was acquired and archived by the New York Public Library, and early VHS copies--remember VHS?--were used in college classes dealing with immigration. We still have a bunch of those VHS tapes. They make good book ends, but they're too light for door stops.
So, in line with the film's primary theme of keeping the past alive in the present, WE ARE NOW REMASTERING THE FILM IN DIGITAL FORMAT so that we can share "Passing Over" with a wider audience. We are facing the final leg of our entirely independent financing endeavors. $6000 in completion funds will get us into digital release--and get you an early dvd copy of our film if you give as little as twenty-five dollars. The funds will cover renewed music licenses, a dedicated web-site, some final editing costs, and a digital launch event in New York.
"Passing Over" has a beautiful original score by film, TV and musical theatre composer Robert Reale, heard on the trailer posted here with Rob's generous permission. But we also use some great nostalgic songs in the movie, like "Guaglione" in a vintage recording by Connie Francis, and a blast-from-the-past local band singing ballads and polkas at a particularly swinging 1972 Marconi Club Labor Day celebration (you'll have to see for yourself).
Help us kickstart this carefully hand-crafted film about time-gone-by into the modern world. We're really proud that it's in that big library in New York, but we want you and many, many others to see it as well.
"Time passes with the seasons. What's left behind is memory." "Passing Over." A different kind of documentary film.
Viewers have been effusive in their response to PASSING OVER. Take a look at some of our testimonials:
"It's wonderful. A brilliant documentary. The film should win all kinds of awards. I watched most of it with my mouth open. The audience wouldn't stop applauding and every clap was genuine. That doesn't happen at screenings." --Alvin Cooperman, producer ( "Susan B Anthony Slept Here," "Follow the River," "Amahl and the Night Vistors," former manager of the Shubert Organization)
"It was so moving. It brought back so many memories. That was my family up there. It was everyone's family up there." --Charlotte Colavin, stage, film and TV actress ("Law and Order," "The West Wing")
"What a great movie. We loved it." --Patty Danko /Kevin Frazier, Speech Pathologist and New York City Firefighter
"I can't believe [the filmmakers] had the foresight to take these pictures when they did. It's absolutely incredible." --William Balash, M.D., internist, Allegheny Valley Hospital
"It's wonderful the way the audience is asked to just watch and live with these people. It's brilliant filmmaking, and very brave. And it makes you think so much about the idea of documentary film--the staging of history." --Guy Lancaster, documentary film writer and researcher
"It's a really cool movie." --Charles Weinstein, independent filmmaker ("Under the Bridge")
"It's totally original, unlike any film I've ever seen. It was a gift. I felt like I spent my time with these magnificent old actors, but they were real people." --Donald Berman, stage film and tv actor ("Sex and the City," "The Greeks.")
"It's great. I went out afterwards with a group of people and we were all talking about it, about how the characters in the movie are so warm, and how much you like being with them." --James Ryan, playwright/screenwriter/film director ("The Young Girl and the Monsoon," "Dennis")
"I'm talking to everyone about your beautiful film. The images remain so vivid... I'm still laughing out loud every time I think of the cut from the comic m.c.'s intro to the juggler." -- Mary Gambadella, script supervisor; former principal dancer with Jose Limon Company
"It's beautiful. Beautiful. I was holding back all the way through the movie, until the ending, then I just went. Tears. And the music. Beautiful." --Dominic Chianese, film, tv and stage actor, and balladeer ("The Godfather," "The Soprano's," "Q &A,")
