Racers all around the world enjoy the thrill of the track and the throaty growl of the engines - the excitement of racing on that day! When you have a great race day on the track, wouldn’t it be great to not only record the day, but also to share authenticated details of your day with everyone you know? Would you like to broaden your competitive pool? Now you can…
ReRace has developed the first system to do just that…the unique on-board racing product which enables racers to not only capture data from your vehicle, but also upload, share and compare your results in a professional structured way, within a community of racers.
Now you can capture GP/F1/Kart like telemetry during your race, and then upload the data to the ReRace community, where you can compete in online, virtual races, using your real data from your track day you can compare results with fellow competitors…who you have never met on the actual track! Our special data encryption ensures that telemetry data is secured and impossible to alter, so only previously acquired “real-time” data is available and shared on-line.
How does it work?
ReRace – the Data Acquisition Device
The ReRace device is an extremely precise, yet adaptable instrument; it can be easily mounted on a vehicle to gather basic data, also by wiring various sensors you can expand the data acquired from the vehicle to the device. The main features are:
- Color Display: high quality, high contrast TFT color display
- LED bar shift gear
- Built in 10 Hz GPS
- Capture RPM, Coolant and Exhaust Temperature and Gear engagement
- OBD port (CAN Bus, compatible with standard ISO15765)
- Connection with GoPro® to synchronize video with the data
- Internal lithium battery to ensure over four hours of race time and easily recharged via cigarette lighter
- ReRace is only 110x75x29mm (4.33x2.95x1.14 inch), only weighs 195 grams (6.8 ounces)
- Special data encryption system (patent pending), used to capture, save, and secure the data for use on ReRace Connect
…but the key element and differentiator in ReRace is the built-in IMU; this captures:
- G-force over three axis
- Roll (lean angle on motorbike)
- Pitch (wheelie angle on motorbike)
- Yaw angle
Here a video that explains how the ReRace device can be configured, installed and connected.
Install the ReRace on Car/Motorbike/Kart
Installing ReRace on Car/Motorbike/Kart is intuitive and simple; there are three threaded inserts on the back of ReRace, just tighten a screw and you are ready to race. It's also compatible with most Ram Mount Device® 's.
Thanks to the internal rechargeable battery you can use the device right away even on a kart.
Without any wiring, the device can acquire a large number of data elements such as lap times, trajectories and speed on the track, G-Force, roll, pitch and yaw angles. By wiring only RPM sensor you will receive RPM and Gear, this unique to ReRace! By wiring others dedicated sensors it's possible to expand the acquired data, you can connect a speed wheel sensor for accurate gear calculation, coolant and exhaust gas temperature sensors. Using ReRace on a new car (suitable for all cars from 2008 on), instead of wiring various sensors, its possible to download all data from the ECU via the OBD port (compatible with standard ISO15765) using a single cable.
Join ReRace Connect
So, now you have your racing data captured, authenticated and videoed, it's time to share your race telemetry with the racing world, and with ReRace Connect www.rerace.com, you can do that, too.
ReRace is designed to integrate with ReRace Connect, which is a community of fellow racers - in your ReRace Connect account you have virtual “Garages” for multiple vehicles, personal profiles, detailed racing analysis, maps, a place to upload your video and of course the ability to ReRace with your results, and compare – even challenge - others within the ReRace Connect community.
Simply upload your data (stored in a SD Memory Card) and using drag and drop to select the settings you would like to use and the graphs and trajectories will be available at your finger-tips. No additional software or plugins are required; the HTML 5 format allows for multi-platform use: PC, MAC, Tablet, and SmartPhone.
What’s so cool about the ReRace device
10 Hz GPS Unit
This is a state-of-the art built-in GPS system base which enables refined capture of racing details, such as trajectories and speed, as well as the ability to measure lap and intermediate times with maximum precision without any external beacon.
Thanks to our database of major worldwide circuits, the track is immediately recognized and finish line and intermediate timeline are loaded automatically. It also possible to create your own personal track, utilizing a simple process and lastly to simpy use the device in open track mode!
Built-in Inertial Measurement Unit
ReRace is the first device of its kind to integrate an inertial measure unit that computes and captures G-Force acceleration and roll, pitch, yaw, angle; this means that for Motorbikes ReRace measures lean and wheelie angle.
ReRace again…your own personal racing video
Connect your GoPro® camera and ReRace will start synchronizing video recording with data acquisition. After uploading video and data on the website, ReRace Connect will automatically create a high quality video with your racing telemetry data just like the professionals on TV.
Effortless storage and data transfer from ReRace Device to your ReRace Connect Account
Just like your digital camera, race data is stored on SD Card memory so you can easily transfer the data from to your system. But, to be more sophisticated – use a SD Wifi Card and transfer your data wirelessly.
Did you cut corners on your race? ReRace Connect will know!
ReRace Connect contains a post-race validation algorithm which will check your data/course to verify that you (and, other members of the ReRace Connect) observed universal racing guidelines. Together with data encrypted at the time of the race, ReRace Connect can assure that all of the data loaded is what you have done on track. There is a level playing field, no one can cheat!
A sensor for every measure you want to collect
What measurements would you like to capture when you race? ReRace enables you to capture a wide range of critical engine and vehicle dynamic data.
The simplest method of measuring car engine data; just attach the cable to the OBD port/electronic control unit and go. Compatible with standard ISO15765, suitable for all cars from 2008 on.
RPM Active Cable
If your car is older than 2008, or you are racing a kart or motorbike, you can capture RPM using RPM Active Cable simply turning wire around high voltage coil cable or low voltage coil cable (coil built in spark plug). You can also connect the RPM Active Cable to the RPM output on your vehicle’s ECU.
Coolant and Exhaust System temperature
Attach the cable to the PT1000 bulb sensor to acquire coolant data; sleeves in various diameters will also be available in order to ensure easy installation. To obtain exhaust system temperature, attach the K-thermocouple to ReRace.
Although gear calculation is already measured by the RPM cable and GPS, if would like maximum precision, you can connect the hall speed sensor to measure wheel revolution.
Attach your GoPro® recorder to synchronize the visual record of your race with telemetry data generated during the race.
SD Wi-Fi Card
Transfer your racing data from ReRace to your computer wirelessly - it could not be easier to transfer your data!
Yes, we are working on developing additional cables/sensors that will allow even more precision and types of data measurements! ReRace device has a CAN line that allows you to connect future acquisition modules.
Note: The OBD and RPM cables will be available for the kickstarter campaign, however, the remaining cables, will be available post-kickstarter in the online store.
What testers say
We've been testing our prototypes with a number of professional users, and here's what they think about it:
Federico Natali - Rider of Italian Stock 600 Championship and Manx Grand Prix, Isle of Man
"... It is really innovative! Reflects all the requirements of the pilot (Riders) needs during a race weekend. Light, practical and functional, the Rerace is what was missing in Motorsport ... "
Massimo Mazzali - Driver of Italian Kart Championship KZ2 CSAI
"...it's amazing how ReRace is small and easy to install on a Kart. Rechargable internal battery and high contrast display makes ReRace a must have for karting..."
We love racing; if it is fast and on a track, we are there! …and, we are also hard core engineers. Our passion for technology and racing brought us together in University where we studied electronic engineering; our first project was a University project to encourage students to design, develop and test a formula racing car; we followed this by starting to develop electronics components for Formula SAE competitions (http://www.eteamsquadracorse.it/).
In 2008 Alessandro designed and manufactured the ET1 car gearbox control unit, while, in 2010, Giovanni developed the ET3 car data acquisition unit.
We met again later because we used to work in the same company as Test Engineers and we started thinking about a device that would eventually become the ReRace project.
But the team wasn’t complete; to develop our idea we needed a professional software developer. So Maurizio (Giovanni's former classmate) who had been working in web technologies for 10 years, joined the team.
After taking up residence in the Technological Center of Lucca, the team met Robbie Vann-Adibé and Elizabeth Buechner (both members of Silicon Tuscany, a company that helps incubate start-ups). Robbie became the Chairman of ReRace and Elizabeth joined as VP of Operations, helping the founders in the scheduling of R & D, Web and Marketing.
ReRace Founders and Members
Giovanni Puccioni: founder. Responsible for hardware development. He worked as hardware and firmware developer as freelance. Developer and testing engineer, for his graduate thesis he developed a datalogger for Formula SAE race car (www.eteamsquadracorse.it)
Alessandro Giovannini: founder. Responsible for firmware development. He worked as DSP firmware developer and as testing engineer, for his graduate thesis he developed a gearbox control unit for the University of Pisa Formula SAE Team (www.eteamsquadracorse.it)
Maurizio Petrini: founder. Responsible for web development. Nearly 10 years of programming and web development experience, building sites and web architectures from the ground up.
At the beginning of 2012 we started developing our first prototype; it was very ‘home made’ as shown in the picture below.
We designed and developed all the hardware and software. We assembled and soldered all the components on PCB by hand. We also did a lot of work testing various GPS modules and inertial measurement unit algorithms. After many months we created the products shown below.
Our second prototype was definitely better looking but still too big. We knew it needed to be much smaller to be installed on a motorbike. We realized we had to change our approach to development, so we understood we had to work first on the product casing and then on the internal components.
Where we’re going
We’ve been working on ReRace for almost 2 years now. Since 2012, we've developed and built many prototypes, tested and improved the hardware, the firmware and the design. The device shown in the video is a real and working prototype. Since May 2013 we have been working with the likes of Moto3 Ambrogio Team to test and tweak the device in official races. In June 2013 the device also obtained CE certification.
Our hardware device is ready for production. It will be manufactured in Itlay by one of our partners. The software side also is almost ready; we just need to finalize ReRace Connect, the first racers community, and the features that enable us to synchronize the data captured with the GoPro® video. It is our goal to provide mobile app versions of the web based system sometime in the near future.
We need Kickstarter's help to go from prototypes to production. Our goal is to raise £30.000; with this funding we will be able to:
- Start the injection mold production
- Set up the other production tools
- Finalize the racers community
- Manufacture the first 100 units
When our goal of £30,000 is met, we anticipate the following timeline:
- Beginning October: Kickstarter completed
- November 2013: Set Up Production line
- January 2014: Inaugural Production Run complete
- March 2014: ReRace Delivered
