Weighted, a supernaturalsiblingdramacomedy: One twin can fly. The other can't. A BYU student capstone
Maya and Damon are twins, but that’s about where their similarities stop. She’s into rock-climbing, and he’s into...well, not much. She’s driven, he’s lazy. So when he discovers he can fly, Maya finds it hard to swallow, especially since this dazzling talent seems to be completely out of her reach. But, after seeing better what his newfound ability has done for and to her brother, Maya realizes that maybe it’s not something she really wants after all.
This film is about the value of difficulty. If a thing isn't tough, it's probably not worth doing. That's an understanding rock climbers and filmmakers have in common. Filmmakers make films because they are challenging, because each new project populates a set of entirely unique obstacles to overcome, which prevents the whole enterprise from becoming boring. Student filmmakers, in particular, are driven by the passion to overcome, and hope to create something of value at the end. Nobody gets paid, nobody gets famous. It's all about the process, the endeavor to meet the challenge of something new and worthwhile.
We're a group of student filmmakers, trying to tell a story about a girl who can't fly. Or rather, the story of Maya, a girl who learns that quintessential life lesson that the most worthwhile things in life are those that are intrinsically and inherently hard. She gets the opportunity to learn this lesson as her twin brother Damon stumbles upon the fact that he can, actually fly." Of course, the idea of "flying" in student film land is quite ambitious, but we have an eager team of engineers and Special FX coordinators who have maximized ideas and resources to make it happen, even on a student budget and student resources. The rest of our hardworking student crew has been active in securing our actors, locations, equipment, props, wardrobe, musical score and in bringing to life the story of Maya and Damon. The story is one worth telling. It's rewarding through relationships, comedy, and theme. But our own funding and budget revisions only go so far. We need YOUR support in helping get Weighted off the ground.
