Almost to $150K – How You Can Help
Hello,
Hope you’re having a great Sunday.
We’re less than $5,000 away from our $150,000 goal. I’d love to make that happen today if we can, as we’ve got an amazing announcement you’re going to love once we hit that magical number.
Here’s how you can help – if you can send out JUST ONE EMAIL to a friend whom you think might really be excited about what we’re doing, it would work wonders. If each of them signed up for even the least expensive reward, amazing things would happen!
And please remember, every dollar goes right into the production and makes SPACE COMMAND that much bigger, better, and delivered faster to you. It’s a big, epic story and we have many great surprises in store for you.
Lots of amazing things have been happening regarding Space Command over the past few days.
Last night, we had a big meeting with all our department heads -- Neil Johnson, Elaine Zicree, David Raiklen, E.J., Justin Massion, web designers Allen Resha and Bryan McClure. We spent hours coordinating our efforts and planning the days to come – website, rewards, pre-production – and how YOU can be even more a part of SPACE COMMAND!
In terms of the website, www.pledgespacecommand.com is up and running, and we’ll be adding content and cool new design elements over the next few days. You’ll be able to read the latest SPACE COMMAND updates, watch all the videos with our cast and crew, read blogs by me, Doug Drexler and David Raiklen, watch Doug and Iain’s designs as they take shape – even learn how to make film and TV yourself with the One-Minute Film School!
Famed STAR WARS and AVENGERS character and creature designer Iain McCaig is now fully aboard SPACE COMMAND. Iain visited Neil’s studio the other day and toured the spaceship set, meeting with our cast and crew, including an amazing session with me and actress Katharine McEwan, discussing her role as SPACE COMMAND’s Odara T’Lynn. Even now, Iain’s starting to design our characters and creatures, doing tests of the Cerberon alien design with ace CG artist Diego Gonzalez of Gnomon. We’ll be posting video of all that soon.
I’m currently working up storylines and other SPACE COMMAND details with Doug Drexler and Neil Johnson. And Doug’s meeting with top effects geniuses today, to give us even more bang for our SPACE COMMAND buck!
In terms of rewards, we’ve got some great ones in the works, which we’ll announce soon – and feel free to let us know of any additional ones you’d like to see, we’ll happily explore those possibilities.
As you know, my dear friend Ray Bradbury passed away a few days ago, and I’ve been posting photos, articles and video memories of my friendship with him.
I’d thought of offering a special $100 Ray Bradbury reward that would have been made up of the many hours of audio I recorded interviewing Ray as research for our eight-hour TV miniseries project RAY BRADBURY’S LOST MARS, based on Ray’s many published and unpublished Martian stories that weren’t included in THE MARTIAN CHRONICLES. Also included would be my unpublished outline for the project, a copy of a photo of me and Ray that he signed to me (also individually signed by me to you) and video footage of me and BATTLESTAR GALACTICA director Michael Nankin (who was signed onto the project) working out the storyline. Sadly, the networks never saw fit to pick up this incredible project. I hope to do it via Kickstarter after we finish SPACE COMMAND.
I’m not offering this reward at this time, as I didn’t want to do anything that would seem inappropriate or untoward. Working with Ray on this project was one of the highlights of my life and career, and I’d love to share it with you. Sometime in the near future we’ll make that happen…
By the way, I’m on the BBC today, talking for a half hour about Ray with Joanne Griffith. I’ll post the link soon as I have it.

Here’s the last photo taken of Ray and me together, from last January. He was every bit as much a delight at the end as the first time I met him when I was ten. On our last few meetings, he’d have me read one of his stories aloud to him. What a joy.

And of course, my favorite thing he ever said to me was, “Looking back over a lifetime, you see that love was the answer to everything.”
I’ll share one other thing about Ray that I’ve never written about, that Ray told me as we sat together in the room filled to the rafters with wonderful items from his life and work, in his bright yellow house.
When Rod Serling sold TWILIGHT ZONE, he called Ray Bradbury. “Help, I don’t know anything about science fiction,” said Rod.
“Come over to the house,” Ray answered.
He took Rod into his basement office and pulled books off the shelf by himself, John Collier, Richard Matheson and Charles Beaumont. “Take these home and read them immediately,” he told Rod.
Rod did so, and bought Collier’s short story “The Chaser” to make into a TWILIGHT ZONE episode. More importantly, he hired Matheson and Beaumont – two of Ray’s protégés – as writers on THE TWILIGHT ZONE. They wrote many classic episodes.
As for Ray, he wrote only one TWILIGHT ZONE episode, an adaptation of his short story “I Sing the Body Electric.” But when I was up in Rod’s attic researching THE TWILIGHT ZONE COMPANION (imagine that), I came upon an unmarked box containing unmade TWILIGHT ZONE scripts – including two by Bradbury!
They were magical, breath-taking… and sadly, never produced.
But Ray produced a universe of magical works – and his spirit continues to inspire me.
All good thoughts your way,
Marc

Doh wrong update.

I'm still waiting for a low(er) pledge including the full color etc book. :)
I'll remain at $1 until then.

I listened to the broadcast on the BBC in the small hours of this morning. It was an interesting programme hearing Marc's reminiscences and recordings of a speech by Ray at a World Science Fiction Convention - Pacificon II in 1964, I think. It's a pity that the interviewer was slightly unprepared, using the wrong termionology ("Conference" not "Convention") and not seeming to know what was played on each extract.

Hey Marc, It's good to see this project being so successful, Though I'm only 18 and not as big of a sci-fi fan as most of the people who are on board for your project, I'm still really excited to see the end result of your project and I cant wait to watch "Space Command", Best of Luck to you!

Posts send out for donations as requested.
I really think the posts of Mr. Bradbury are wonderful and so important. Thank you so much for sharing. I would love to know what the scripts were about. If you want to keep writing more Bradbury memories, I would be honored to read them.

Thanks so much for all your kind words...

Marc, I never met anyone who was not a SiFi fan. As a lifelong SiFi fan myself I can say that your project/s interest and excite me more than my humble poorly written words could ever properly express... All I can say is THANK YOU for allowing ALL of us to be a part of it all from the inside looking outward and beyound...

"They were magical, breath-taking… and sadly, never produced."
Produce them! Produce them! How I miss the Twilight Zone and Outer Limits!
Creator Jeff Kaplan on June 10, 2012
Marc, I signed up for Lieutenant and will do so again at the next level up on your next project. If finances permit, and kid expenses don't hamper me, I'll do the Captain. Your words tell a wondrous story and remind me of 30 years ago when I was first being introduced to Science Fiction as a genre. It was a magical time (not like Michael Jackson magical), but of wondrous stories taking me to galaxies far, far, away in both the past, present and future. I really want to see your projects come to fruition, and like many fans I hope to feel in some small part connected to your projects. Good hunting!

You know, if you want more people to pledge money, or current backers to pledge more money, you could tell us something about what what the movies will be about. I'm not saying you should tell us what will happen, or what is/will be in the script. I mean, tell us what Space Command is.
Battlestar Galactica is about the last human survivors trying to find a new home.
Star Trek is about explorers encountering new worlds.
FireFly is about a gang of thives and their passengers trying to make a living.
What will Space Command be about?
