I just upgraded to the hardcover book. Yay! Do I still get an ebook or not?
Creator Jon Pack and Gary Hustwit on April 10
Hi Marie-Andree, it's late May, we posted in this update: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/586262941/the-olympic-city/posts/430861

So, what is the new estimated time of delivery?
Creator Jon Pack and Gary Hustwit on March 25
Thanks Johanna, yes we can set that up for you, email info@olympiccityproject.com and we'll get you the upgrade code. Cheers!
Creator Johanna McCrehan on March 25
Hi - Got the email today about the new site and every thing looks great!
While you mention the available upgrade for those who backed for the ebook at the $10 level, I was wondering what the cost change might be for a backer at the $25 level - I'd be interested in purchasing the book for $75, as long as I still receive the postcards I originally pledged for. :)
Thoughts?
Thanks!

We'll have a new update going out tomorrow with lots of news. Thanks!

So, what's up?
Creator Jon Pack and Gary Hustwit on November 21, 2012
Thanks Martin and Christian, apologies for the delay but these have been some busy months. We'll have a proper update up soon... I'm in Moscow photographing for the project right now. We've got a bunch of new images to show you all, will get a photo-filled update posted later this week.
Cheers! -Gary

I have to agree with Christian - it's been very quiet around here for a while. Any updates?
Creator Christian Dose on November 15, 2012
Hi Jon and Gary,
is's been nearly four month since you last post herer. How are things going? Did you visit all the cities you wanted? What is the current status of you project?
Looking forward to march next year to receive you book,
regards, Christian

Jon and Gary - I was a backer on your campaign and I was wondering if there was anything you could do to help me out with my campaign. http://igg.me/p/242765… Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

I live in NYC and would love to be there, but sadly am on vacation. Have a great event!
Creator Jon Pack and Gary Hustwit on July 27, 2012
Paul, sorry but it's too late to change anything in the Kickstarter system. But there are still a few hundred books left in the 1,000 copy limited edition that will be put on sale closer to the publication date in March, so we'll let everyone know when those are available. Thanks!
Creator Paul on July 27, 2012
Jon and Gary: I realize funding has been over for a while but any chance I could up my pledge to the $85 level?
Creator Martin Hay on July 23, 2012
You know, the more I read about the London Olympics, the more disillusioned I am. Seems that the sponsors think they can run roughshod over everyone including the emergency services, the local residents, the whole country's businesses, and anyone who likes chips (fries to Americans). Interesting, also, that some of the events are being staged in Hampden, which is not only 500ish miles from London, but also (I reckon) the furthest stadium of its size from London whilst still remaining in the British Isles.
Ho-hum. That's my rant over. Nothing (much) to do with this Kickstarter, and I genuinely hope you guys can reignite my sense of wonder. The Olympics used to be better than this.

I have been following this project for a while now, and I am pleased to be able to finally pledge. I would love to see some things from the Atlanta games, but I am sure whatever you do will be great.
Creator Matthew J. Wetzler on June 27, 2012
I would imagine Munich (1972) and/or Berlin (1936) were on your shortlist to begin with due to their historical significance, but if not I would love to see at least one of them included. Munich's Olympiapark is largely intact and at least a few venues from the '36 games are still standing as well. Can't wait to see the project evolve and for more updates from your travels.
Creator Melanie Goux on June 25, 2012
Great project! I'd like to suggest you contact Iconologic (http://www.iconologic.com/) when in Atlanta. The firm, (formerly Copeland+Hirthler) was responsible for the Atlanta Olympic bid package and was subsequently awarded the full identity project of the Atlanta Olympics. As a long time Atlanta resident, it was the best part of the games, IMO. Oh, and I disagree with the other commenter who said there is nothing left of the Atlanta games. There's plenty if you know where to look. Finally, if you need help connecting with anyone while in Atlanta, I might be able to help.
Creator Sarah Pogson on June 24, 2012
I am a Travel Consultant, and am really interested to see the finished product! Blew out my monthly budget to order the Hardcover Art Book, but am sure it will be worth every dollar. Excited to be a part of the project, and looking forward to recieving the finished product in March next year!

What kind of camera and lenses are you using to take the photos? It would be great to have that kind of info in the book.

I would be interested in seeing Sydney in the book. I'm biased, of course, being from Sydney but it would be great to see how the city compares to the other Olympic cities.

Come to Vancouver! We hosted the last Winter Olympics, and even though it's only been 2 years, you can see both the good (the speed skating oval is now a multi purpose sports complex) and the bad (the ongoing debacle that is the Olympic Village condo projects). Plus, we have the best Chinese food this side of the Pacific!

I'd like to suggest Melbourne (1956) and Sydney (2000). You could do the two for one.
Melbourne is an interesting one - almost nothing remains of the venues. The main venue was the Melbourne Cricket Ground. While it is still there and will be for many years to come, it has been entirely demolished and rebuilt. The Southern stand was demolished and rebuilt in the 1990s, and the rest followed in the early 2000s. In fact one of the reasons was that the Commonwealth Games was held in Melbourne in 2006.
The other interesting part is what is called 'Olympic Park'. It is now pretty much completely demolished and rebuilt. All of the 1956 venues have been demolished - you could have seen the last of the original venues in pieces earlier this year. The precinct remains of course, and has excellent sporting venues, but none were there in 1956. I wasn't born in 1956, and didn't live in Melbourne until 1989, but I remember the 'dog track' at Olympic Park. A greyhound racing venue which I imagine was used for something at the Olympics. This venue was demolished in the 1990s from memory. I think the current football/rugby stadium sits on part of its former home. The other Olympic Park stadium is one I played rugby on in the early 90s. It was used for rugby right up until recently when the new rugby stadium opened.
I don't know exactly where the swimming was held, but I think that venue has been demolished. There was a large swimming pool near Olympic Park that I remember was old and getting decrepit, but it has been gone for at least 15 years.
Also of interest is the site of the Olympic village at Heidelberg West - I haven't been to the exact area but I recall reading when Melbourne was bidding for the 1996 Olympics that it had become one of the worst slums in Melbourne. There were shops there with Olympics in the name but I don't know if those are still there.
To Sydney - I lived there during the 2000 Olympics. I haven't been to the venues for a long time because I've been back in Melbourne since 2003. I went to the Wresting at the Conference and Entertainment centre at Darling Harbour - this venue is slated for demolition so you might be able to capture it before it goes - or maybe in its death throes. The main OIympic site was a bit of a white elephant for a few years I think. It gets reasonable use these days, although I think the large stadium is under-utilised in comparison to the Melbourne Cricket Ground. I think it is not well located for general use, and people in Sydney don't attend sport in the same numbers as happens in Melbourne.
I guess the main thing about those Sydney venues is how much of a ghost town it feels like when there is no sporting event being held.
Anyway, if you do decide to do Melbourne and Sydney (I'm assuming you would do both if you do either) then get in touch and I'll offer whatever help I can. I might be able to find some friends who know more about the 1956 venues too.
Creator Roxane Tourigny on June 17, 2012
Hiya. I've to Barcelona myself and I was a bit dissapointed about the abandoned state of thenplaza around the Olympic antenna is left. It could have been a nice public venue... I went there over in 2007 but I'm not sure anything had change that much since.

Creator Gregor McElvogue on June 16, 2012
Barcelona, Sarajevo, Tokyo, Nagoya, Munich, Sydney, London, Amsterdam. The list could get pretty long. You should investigate round the world airline tickets or get one to sponsor you!
Creator Jared Feuer on June 16, 2012
Oh, and I live in Atlanta. There's really nothing to see here - the structures have mostly been integrated fully into the city and you can barely tell the Olympics were ever here. Which is a good thing, actually.
Creator Jared Feuer on June 16, 2012
Not sure about SLC. So bland and not enough history yet. Definitely Moscow. Perhaps Montreal for the futurism.
Creator Jon Pack and Gary Hustwit on June 16, 2012
@Jung - We're planning on having a few text contributions in the form of forewords to the book. But there are plenty of academic books out there that have lengthy economic analyses, impact studies, reports, charts, etc... this is a photography book, so we're trying to tell those stories through images.
@Martin - Great comment... when optimism and nationalism meets sports and money... pretty much sums up the Games. But there are ways to do it right, too, it all comes down to the design. Cheers!
Creator Jon Pack and Gary Hustwit on June 16, 2012
Yes! We made it! Thanks everyone for supporting this project and helping us reach our funding goal. You are all amazing. Cheers!
Creator Jung Kim on June 16, 2012
Love the idea. I wonder if the book will just have photos or also text with some research into the impact the Olympics have on their host cities.
Creator Martin Hay on June 16, 2012
Looks like the funding goal has been met - outstanding! Being Scottish I find it irritating that once again my tax money is being hurled at London with reckless abandon so that they can have yet more amenities and events on their doorstep, whilst we're left out in the cold (and the rain today...). At the same time, though, the thing that sparked my interest in this project is the 'furutism' aspect - the sky-high hopes for a better tomorrow, and the optimistic and flamboyant architecture that this encourages. And in some cases the shattered dreams that result. I hope there'll be lots of great photos in this book, and as someone mentioned previously it would be good to see a few "then and now" images.
Glad you guys have hit your target. And a couple of weeks left to expand your premise too - nice!
Creator Charles K. Alexander II on June 15, 2012
Moscow, definitely, especially to see if there were any differences with the way "the West" put on the Olypmics. Barcelona, to see if the impact on the city lived up to the Games, themselves. Perhaps some of the Winter Games venues, especially in countries like Japan that don't automatically come to mind when thinking of Winter sports.
Creator Marcus Hopkins on June 15, 2012
I hope to be as somewhat successful with my project. Keep it up.
Creator Marcus Hopkins on June 15, 2012
I admire your project :) I love the Olympics! I am an Olympic Hopeful for the next Olympics for Gymnastics. I do rings, floor exercise.. all of it. I also sing & act .. I'm planning to make my music video soon!
Creator SinoSamba <(-'.'-)> on June 15, 2012
I would like to throw in Moscow as a suggestion for your book. It's the first Olympics I can remember watching and would like to see what happened to the venues there.
Creator Christian Dose on June 15, 2012
Hi Jon and Gary,
I really hope, you will reach your goal and get your project started!
Germany really is worth a trip. I think, Munich is a good example how a city can benefit from hosting the games. The Olympic park is a huge public park with lots of venues that have been built for the Olympics. Also the Olympic village is a attractive place to live. Did you know that part of the smaller (low rise) houses in the Olympic village have been demolished and rebuild between 2007 and 2010 according to new living standards but still keeping the character of the whole village?
If you will go to Berlin make sure to note the roof of the Olympic stadium, which has been built for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. It matches the old building perfectly and improves the use of it a lot.
Good luck and keep it on!
