Two mismatched teens must survive a project on parenting by raising a sack of sugar, but family roots aren't always sweet.
THE STORY:
Inspired by recent studies on the psychological effects of divorce - for better or worse - on children and family dynamics, Sugar Baby explores the complex contradiction of feeling loved and abandoned all at once. The story follows Manny Valdez and Rebecca Stevens on one Sunday during their junior year in high school after they've been paired together in biology to complete a project on parenting that involves raising a sack of sugar as though it were a newborn. Set in the dead of winter before their Holiday break, it takes tremendous effort to focus on the project that is worth their final grades. As they reluctantly dive into creating a fictional family tree, secrets that have been buried in each of them rise to the surface. Despite their opposite and conflicting personalities, Manny and Rebecca discover a powerful similarity between their families that connects them in a way that others can't understand...except maybe Santa Claus.
While most of Sugar Baby's themes are revealed through subtext during the awkward assignment meeting of two 16-year-olds, the questions and fears raised are powerful and true within each of us. How much of our parents do we actually inherit? Apples may not fall far from the tree, but sometimes they roll.

Sugar Baby was written with very minimal shooting "challenges" in mind - instead with the goal of using a character driven screenplay to focus on the details of every element of the filmmaking process. It is a rare gift that student filmmakers are able to put all of their creative efforts and training into telling a well-composed story by focusing on details, rather then stretching a budget and crew to meet the demands of special effects or unnecessary techniques. We feel that often those challenges end up sacrificing the story for flash, and we'd like to change that. We are on a mission to tell a good story beautifully, artfully, skillfully, and flawlessly using only the minimum of what we need along with our years of training and experience in film.
That being said, our budget is simple and our fundraising challenges are great. We've got to raise the necessary funds in time to complete this project by January 27th and have a final cut of the film by March 1st in order to share it with film festivals and YOU! Our budget meets the minimal necessary costs for us to accomplish our goal. Most of our budget will go toward feeding our cast & crew of over 20 people during our long days on set. We also have budgeted for a rental car that will be necessary to transport equipment and materials to our shooting location, as well as any equipment we are unable to get from Emerson College, production design supplies and props, costumes, and emergency money in case any extra expenses arise along the way. Any extra funds we receive will go toward festival submission fees and promotional expenses. Your contribution will not go to waste!
