Artists from Oakland and Guadalajara are meeting up this November to collaborate on a mixed media art project of epic proportions.

We are a group of artists committed to building a bridge between the creative communities of Oakland and Guadalajara.

By developing a network of artists, we aim to cross the divide between Mexico and the USA. Oaklajara will facilitate these creative communities to engage in a dialogue, expanding and enhancing possibilities for individuals on both sides of the border.

Our collective comprises both English and Spanish speakers. By engaging local creators in the collaborative artistic process, we will create a bi-lingual environment for the cross pollination of artistic endeavours.

We all see and hear a lot of misleading news about Mexico and the United States. To unite, build, create and learn together is to break down barriers and forge an understanding of our similarities as humans and artists.

How this is going to work:

This November a group of artists from Oakland, CA will be traveling to Guadalajara to collaborate on a mixed media art project. The purpose of this project is to use art (i.e. drawing, painting, music, sculpture, ect.) as a tool to aide in communication between speakers of two different languages. In the work leading up to this project, we in Oakland have been drawing simple pictures labeled with their definitions in both english and spanish. In Guadalajara we will build on this to include making sculptures that have translations on them, as well as using music as a common language for us to communicate in. We already have bi-lingual members in our group of artists in both Oakland and Guadalajara. We aim to become more bi-lingual through this art, and build a network of artists on an international level. We will be holding studio art time and workshops to involve the greater community in this process. The collaborative studio work will continue live at shows and events where it will be showcased to share knowledge. All of this activity will be documented and made available as a tool for other people looking to become bi-lingual. Our method specifically appeals to visual and interactive learners who learn best through the act of being creative.

By gathering this community through art, we will also create an opportunity for conversation beyond art and language to discuss current cultural "conflicts" and similarities between Mexico and the United States. These gatherings with art, music, and food from both cultures will create common ground to draw together a broader group to participate in this project. Our goal is to make as many artistic translations as possible, to be documented and made into an archive. This collection of images will be shared online, and hopefully made into a book. This project is the beginning of a whole new group of Mexican and American artists coming together to make art, and learn each others' language. After this month in Guadalajara, we would like to host artists in Oakland to further build upon our ideas, display work, have events and so on.

The money that we raise from kickstarter will go towards: purchasing art supplies, renting event space, documenting, and sharing our creations. The participants from Oakland will be funding their own travel and housing costs.
