About this project
The goal of this project is to make a fully professional recording of a cantata I composed from January - February of 2011. I don't intend to sell the recording - all I want to do is put it on my web site so that I can share this music with the world and, hopefully, encourage other conductors and choirs to perform it!
The cantata is a setting of the 46th psalm. It's scored for choir, organ, brass, timpani, and bells. The money I'm trying to raise will go toward paying the singers and musicians for the recording session. The recording is scheduled to take place on Monday, December 5. The Kickstarter closing date is so early so that the funds can be in place by that time.
I composed this piece in honor of my good friend and former colleague, Michael Surratt upon his retirement after 32 years of service from the Union Church of Hinsdale, IL. Mike is an exceptionally talented organist, so the organ part is something fierce.
The text is from a very rare translation of the psalm, known as Young's Literal Translation. Mr. Young was a 19th century biblical scholar self-taught in ancient Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic. What's particularly striking is that he does not render these ancient languages into modern English grammar, but translates them word for word. The final effect is akin to the syntax of modern poetry, using vocabulary from the 17th century. It's a very striking text, to say the least.

By all means yes. I tried to low-ball the project goal, knowing that I would end up paying for a lot of this project out of pocket. Kickstarter doesn't allow you to donate to your own project though, so I can't include those funds on the site. Let's just say that any and all funds above the $4,000 mark would be greatly appreciated :)
