Stories on the Skin: Tattoo Culture at FAU
Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton
In case you haven’t noticed, tattoos are kind of a big deal at the moment. That isn’t why we did this project, but why we are glad we did. Let’s face it, some of the pop culture treatment of tattoos can be a little shallow.
Stories on the Skin: Tattoo Culture at FAU is a multi-year project devoted to the metaphor of tattoos as a kind of book written on the body. Arthur Jaffe, artists’ book collector and founder of the Jaffe Center for Book Arts, one of the gems of our school, dreamed up the idea. Hundreds of Florida Atlantic University students and creative faculty and staff have collaborated on several phases including a survey, photo exhibition with catalogue, interviews, workshops, and live performances, some of which you can see in the video, edited by a student from raw footage. No one has taken this kind of approach to the subject.
All of this will be made into a highly original film, but we need your help to make it a reality. We have raised funds up to this point to do the shooting, but now we are reaching out to you to help us finish the professional editing, to bring it to completion. The money we raise will go to this purpose, to make absolutely the best movie we can. We are so proud to be using Kickstarter, putting us in the company of so much creativity, and exposing our project to the world outside FAU.
If we are successful with this Kickstarter campaign we will be able to produce a film that reflects our ultimate goal of turning life into art, combining visually stunning examples of body art with the moving and revelatory stories behind them. As we begin screening the film, talking to more students and gathering more stories, we hope to change the conversation about ink in the 21st century. Ultimately we will be able to distribute the film widely, but you may be among the first to see it.
