GOAL: Raise $3000 (to supplement a $5000 grant), which will allow us to greatly improve the execution of this project by improving the quality of materials, purchasing lighting, increasing the size, and feeding our help!

INTRODUCTION:

"Long Island City, NY (April 15th, 2012) Socrates Sculpture Park and the Architectural League of New York have selected Jerome Haferd and K. Brandt Knapp as the inaugural recipients of a new grant and residency for emerging architects and designers to exhibit a full scale project at Socrates Sculpture Park. Socrates, in partnership w/ the League, established the residency to explore the intersections between architecture and sculpture and the increasing overlaps in references ,materials, and building techniques between the two disciplines…” –Socrates Sculpture Park & Architectural League of NY

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

CURTAIN was selected from 115 submissions by designers, artists, and architects being asked to imagine an architectural object which could contribute, provoke, and add to today’s ever-changing disciplinary landscape. An interdisciplinary jury included Alyson Baker, Yolande Daniels, Richard Gluckman, Chistopher Leong, and Leo Villareal. The award includes a $5000 production grant to fund our project, as well as full access to the resources and fabrication facilities of Socrates’ outdoor studio during a two-month residency.

MISSION:

-We have been given the honor and charge to construct a full-scale architectural project meant to be creative, experimental, and provocative stimulus for ideas and discussion across multiple disciplines of Art, Architecture, and Sculpture.

.-The base grant of $5000 will be enough to erect and assemble the base Folly structure. It was important to us that the project be achievable at that budget if necessary. However, The $3000 raised here will make this good project (and design-build residency!) much better by allowing us to upgrade the quality of the wood, purchase important additional components like lighting, and to fund "events" by providing pizza for the helpers, etc. We will also be able to increase the overall size, purchase extra chain link for repairs, and recycle the materials when completed. Thank you all in advance!

-We hope to create something that will make this inaugural design-build collaboration between two innovative and passionate non-profit organizations and two young emerging architects a stunning success for future endeavors of this kind.

PROJECT DETAILS:

CURTAIN is an object on the land as well as a mutable, spatial experience at close range.  Nestled within the Socrates Sculpture Park, the structure uses a twenty-five foot grid and an inner nine-square zone which rises and falls to form a triangulated landscape. The performance of "the curtain” is created by  white, linked strands that can be played with, pulled back and passed through--giving it an equivocally transformative character.

CURTAIN proposes to build an armature of slender wooden posts, articulating a space 20 feet on each side and over twelve feet high that is hung with white plastic chain, or “beads”. Fixed in some areas and hanging free in others, the white chain will create a series of “rooms” that viewers can occupy, offering changing spatial experiences within the outline defined by the series of wooden frames.
