Art photography book of UNMATA symbol tattoos from dancers and friends, worldwide.

SIGIL, INK. is a fine art photography book of UNMATA and UNMATA inspired tattoos, and the stories of the people who have felt compelled to imprint this symbol on their bodies.

A Sigil (from the Latin Sigillum meaning 'seal') is defined as a symbol used in magic and occult practices. It is a pictorial representation of the magicians desired outcome, a symbol infused with the will of its creator, charged with a purpose. Thus it is exceedingly appropriate that Amy Sigil, director of the internationally recognized dance troupe, UNMATA, should have serendipitously forged such a sigil. It started from humble beginnings in a small dance studio in Sacramento many years ago...

The UNMATA symbol itself is the combination of a waxing and waning moon facing each other, but the significance lies in the empty space in between, representing infinite possibilities.

The name and the symbol have grown beyond the edges of the local dance community and have extended around the globe. Each person who has embraced the symbol has a different story, a unique inspiration and affinity towards the symbol. To each person, that empty space of infinite possibility calls to them with a different song, in a different voice.

This book is a tribute to all of those people who have chosen to adorn their skin with a symbol that brings all of their diversity together, bound only by a waning and a waxing moon.

We've collected photographs and stories from people all around the world who want to share their connection to the UNMATA symbol, and the unique imprint it has left not only on their skins, but in their hearts.

We have an extremely talented designer with 20 years of experience currently placing these images in the context of a photography book, alongside the stories we've collected from each individual participant describing the personal struggles and triumphs which have inspired them.

The next step is to order copies of the book. The specs for the book will be 8.5 x 8.5 hardcover full color glossy.

We've priced out printing and production costs, and we'd like to raise enough money to be able to order a minimum of 125 books (plus S&H) by October, which is when our 10-year anniversary dance show happens. The more donations we receive, the more copies we will be able to order and make available to you.

Please live a little of the UNMATA spirit and help us make our project a reality!

Thank you!
