About this project

Hello!

My name is Andrew, and I’m a filmmaker with a background in fine art and animation.  Recently I've teamed up with a group of talented artists and production crew to create a new project called SOLIPSIST.  We are stoked to share this with you!

ABOUT THE FILM:

SOLIPSIST is a three part psychedelic fantasy short film about otherworldly beings whose minds and bodies converge into one entity.  Filled with elaborate costumes, stunning visual effects, and underwater puppets, the film is a non-narrative purely visual/audio experience designed to transport viewers through a hypnotic, dream-like experience.   It consists of three parts, each featuring visually fantastic characters and creatures that converge with each other in surreal ways.  The film concludes by featuring all three segments combine into a colorful, psychedelic finale.

INSPIRATION & CONCEPT:

“Solipsist” is meant to be a purely visual film built around the idea of convergence and unison between living things.  The title comes from the philosophical theory of solipsism in which the self is the only thing that one can know or prove to exist.  The isolation of this theory inspired me to imagine a counter-hypothesis – a world in which living beings are not constrained by a singular experience.  Rather, the characters in this film are constantly merging into one another, forming a collective consciousness through unison of their minds and bodies.

The visual style of the film is also an integral part of the film’s concept.  My goal is to create a film that is extremely colorful and playful in its materials with an emphasis on practical special effects, costumes and puppetry.  Jim Henson’s muppets and fantasy films of the 80s are a huge inspiration for me in their use of physical props and creatures.  I want to bring this practice of using tactile production design and creature-making into my own work to bring this fantasy world to life.

THE PRODUCTION:

To kick off this film I’m banding together with some extremely talented artists and designers to flesh out this world.  Creating the various props, sets, costumes and puppets will require a month of preproduction and building.  The shoot itself will require 2-3 days of shooting on a stage with a 15-20 person crew.  We plan to shoot this project on the RED camera.  The post-production phase will involve 3 months of compositing and generating CG effects in Maya.  Andrew the director will perform the majority of the visual effects himself in post-production, but will definitely need additional FX help because of the immense scope of such a visually rich project.  The estimated duration of the film will be 10 minutes.

THE GOAL:

“Solipsist” is meant to be a meditative and hypnotic experience for dreamers. This film is designed to straddle the line between art video and film for exhibition at film festivals and art galleries.  Once the film is finished, we will enter the film through the festival circuit.  Once the film has made the festival rounds it will make its way to galleries and  be uploaded for online viewing.

WE NEED YOUR HELP:

The love and attention we are giving to the visual complexity of this film will require a budget that needs your help.  All funding will go toward the physical production, the visual effects post-production, as well as the film's festival tour.  The more generous souls out there who can contribute, the better quality we can achieve in realizing this world to its fullest potential.

THANK YOU!!!

We greatly appreciate everything and anything you are willing to give, and we can’t wait to share this film with you.  Thank you for your support!!

Sincerely,

Andrew and the Solipsist crew
