NEWS FLASH: SO... We've done it y'all! We've reached my fundraising goal, in what seemed like the blink of a sparrow's eye. How did you guys do that? I'm amazed, overwhelmed, thankful, PSYCHED...
But truth be told, I set a modest goal, mostly because $5000 seemed like so much money I had a hard time believing we'd make it. But there's so much more work to be done on the record, and there's always plenty of room for improvement and expansion! SO:

It's simple. I'm making a record, and releasing it myself. I am about halfway finished with the tracking, thanks to calling in favors from the four corners of the earth, doing handyman work in exchange for studio time, and the great fortune of having some of the best help IN THE WORLD.
This record is riding an enormous wave of momentum. Avalanches, volcanoes, oil spills of momentum. I have spent the last few years touring, writing, and recording with artists that I really love and respect (Abigail Washburn, Bobby Bare, Jr., Tommy & The Whale, and many others). And meanwhile, I've written an album of my own. All those countless thousands of hours of creative effort, anguish and exaltation, are coming to fruition now.
That's all exactly as it should be, but I just can't pay for all the opportunities that are before me. It's not cheap to produce and release a full-length studio album. Especially not one that will be created to these EXACTING STANDARDS OF PERFECTION! I have to harness all this momentum, now.
So, I need a hand funding the rest of the tracking, then the mixing, mastering, and duplication of this collection of songs.
Here's a breakdown of what it costs:
$1000 - Engineer (he who drives the choo-choo) / Producer
$900 - Studio Time (this is a small fraction of the actual cost, which I offset by doing handyman work for the studio owners!)
$1500 - Musicians (at the "I'll pay you what you deserve some day, I promise" rate)
$1000 - Mixing
$1000 - Mastering
$1000 - 1st Press Manufacturing
$200 - Hard Drive for Data Backup
That comes out to $6,600. My kickstarter goal is $5000. We'll see how we do with that goal first. The more funds that come in, the better I can afford to promote this thing once it's finished.
You may say to yourself - "get a record deal, kid" - in which sentiment you would not be totally wrong, just mostly wrong. A record label would do very much the same thing you will be doing by choosing to help me today. But this is a new and crazy era for the music biz - and Kickstarter is a new way of bringing a record to life. By helping me now, you are skipping the middleman and helping me get my music directly to you and the rest of the world through the most direct, honest route possible. It's awesome!
