Brewery in Floyd, VA!
(BTW, the brewing system in the video is my HOMEBREW system, not the brewery I want to start!)
Floyd has some amazing small businesses - a local coffee roaster, hard cider house, meadery, winery, creamery, regionally renowned wood-fired pizza, world music festival, and a tapas bar to name a few. What's missing? A brewery of course! Every town, especially a place as cool and special as Floyd, needs it's own brewery. I'm ready to step up and make this happen. It's time - it's past time!
I have spent the past several years brewing with the intention of opening a micro-brewery "someday." That "someday" is now. Besides brewing every chance I get, I have also spent the last year and a half reading and researching everything I could get my hands on concerning not only how to make better brews, but on how to successfully start a small local brewery.
In addition to gaining both hands-on and academic knowledge in brewing I have had the opportunity to talk with several experienced professional micro-brewers and they have agreed to be there for me as I get started and have questions during the process.
I know the nano scale of brewing won't afford me the opportunity to quit my day job, but it's not about that at this point. I want to start small - offering only growler fills and supplying local restaurants with great tasting local beer. The goal is to do this while raising additional funds to expand the brewery and eventually start paying myself! I don't have dreams of becoming another Dogfish Head or Sierra Nevada - I just want to make good beer for the residents of my community, all the good folks who visit our little mountain town each year, and steadily expand to Blacksburg, Roanoke and beyond.
So, what about the logistics and financials of this project? Besides the money I have invested in this project and will as the months unfold, an additional 55K is bare bones but it can be done, especially with all the help of my Floyd friends. I'm relying on all the people who have already helped (thank you Missy for the fine Logo and Mike and Erin for the video!) or have offered to help out with projects like setting up the brewery and tasting room, to washing kegs! Floydians, as well as our enthusiastic visitors, are always more than glad to pitch in to help support great ideas. We've already had at least 3 successful Kickstarter campaigns in Floyd!
$55K is nothing if you look at how virally powerful email and Facebook can be for small businesses. Basically, I need 1000 people to donate 55 bucks each for this project to get started! BUT, give what you can and, most importantly, spread the word to your friends who could give a few bucks too.
Lastly, in keeping with the spirit of Floyd County, I plan to have a KickStarter Potluck Party once we get up and running and everyone, no matter how much you donated, is welcome to come and enjoy free beer, good friends and food!
After you make your donation :-), please check out these other great businesses in and around Floyd (and tell 'em I sent ya):
NO. Your pledge is a promise that you will donate if I meet my 55K. If I end at 54,500 I will not be funded and none of my backers' credit cards will be charged.
