Publishing a book about generosity and community within book arts, as well as putting together a wall installation for my thesis show.
*note: I have no video-making skills, so please accept this substitute of a slideshow of mockup and example images.
I've gone over my goal amount! Wow! Thank y'all so much! Updates about where the extra funding will go are here.
I am creating a book and installation documenting Labors of Love, my year-long project exploring how generosity builds community through the unique craft culture of book arts. How deeply do our artistic hubs depend on community? How do these places work to foster and enrich it? In what ways do these artists interact with the larger community?
I started with five weeks on the road, visiting book arts and community arts centers, and meeting a hundred people in twenty-three cities: directors, artists, volunteers, and professors shared their advice, resources, and homes with me as examples of how generous acts can strengthen connections between individuals, their local communities, and the larger craft scene. In repayment, I am individually crafting an artwork to gift each participant as a tangible symbol of our time together.
To share this experience and the connections I have found, I am illustrating a book of these interactions, which will be transformed into a map of connections for my MFA thesis exhibition.
The book is a visual narrative: using illustrations alongside travel notes and personal recollections, I am explaining and celebrating this generosity to expand the way we think about its necessity in all of our relationships. This book also illustrates the gifts that I made for the participants to show how my time with them influenced the object that I created and how their generosity affected our connection. It will then be printed and distributed to all of the participants alongside their gift as a record of the overall project and a further way to connect the community of participants.
This book (64 pages, black and white, all personally illustrated) is a labor of love I have spent countless hours on. As a limited edition, it will only be available to participants, funding backers, and the select few lucky enough to catch one during the thesis exhibition. :)
The exhibition installation will be an expanded wall-sized transformation of this book – with a chalkboard background, each cell of this map will display an image of the a gift, a selection from the text, or an illustration, with a chalk web drawn between cells to visualize the connection of the community.
Financial support is needed in several aspects of the project: photography for final documentation of the gifts before they are sent out, printing the book, shipping all these objects, and the exhibition installation. My total expected budget is a little over $1400, but luckily, I have already received $900 worth of funding! This will cover the book printing and some of the other costs, but I still need to raise an additional $500. Of course, but this is where you can help! Your assistance will be greatly appreciated, and I hope that these rewards reflect that.
Please let me know if you have any questions--thank you so much for your consideration!
Warmest wishes for you and yours,
~april hannah llewellyn
I have already had two wonderful people volunteer to help me finish some crucial aspects of my project. They are both alumns of my program and are both currently working for more stable employment. If I raise over my goal amount of $500, the extra will go to compensating these people for their time and work. I'm sure we can all appreciate how important it is to be recognized for our efforts, and I'd love to pay them back for their generous volunteer help!
Also, now that it's gone even farther over, I'll be paying for extra costs such as: extra paint and rollers, printing and mounting large photographs for the secondary show I'm in, plates and paper for printing the postcards, extra book printing and shipping costs, etc).
Yes. It is a 64 page, black and white, digitally printed paperback book. They will be individually numbered and signed, in an edition between 250-300 (to be determined by the printing date). It includes an introduction to my project, a bit about book and paper arts and some resources, and a page or two about every place I visited or person that I met with what I they shared with me and what I learned collectively from the experience. Not only does it include dozens of black and white illustrations from this trip, but also the stories of the generosity received in many ways from people and illustrations of the gifts I made for them in return.
The full list of excellent participants--both in community and book and paper arts fields--is available here: http://aprilhl.net/roadtrip/
Indeed! I made commemorative letterpress postcards (using a polymer plate created from my original drawing, for those interested) for funding the trip portion of my project. The postcards for THESE rewards will be made by the same process (letterpress polymer plate), though they will be of a different design/drawing. They're in the works, but I'm going to use metal letterpress ornaments as my inspiration.
The handmade paper cards will be crafted in the same way as my previously created handmade paper cards, but I will be making new paper for the cards--so they'll be delightfully, uniquely different from previous cards. I make these cards by pamphlet-stitching french paper into handmade paper covers. It's of course quite possible and easy to write on the handmade paper itself (it is very smooth!), but, as it's usually pigmented and colorful, might not provide the best legibility. Plus, sewing in extra paper leaves a much larger writing surface! :)
