About this project

The Western New York Book Arts Center (WNYBAC) wants to do for screen printing what it has done for letterpress - make it a viable, vibrant, engaging part of its community based activities... not as a curiosity or a club for a select few, but accessible for anyone who is interested in making artwork and keeping hand arts alive.

The Western New York book Arts Center is a non-profit cultural site in Buffalo, NY that has grown from a small gathering of like-minded cultural workers in 2005 to acquiring a disused building in downtown Buffalo in 2008 to quickly become most active book art centers in the country.

Most of this has been done through countless volunteer hours of many many people and community support. Operations funding has been done primarily through offering classes and field trips to thousands of kids and adults and selling prints made in the shop as well as other self-generated income including two previous successful kickstarter campaigns. (Great thanks again to all of our past kickstarter supporters!)

THE PROJECT
This past summer, a big project was innocently started in the one fully underutilized space at WNYBAC- and old boiler room affectionately nicknamed “the murder room” - No, no one was killed there but it would have made a great set for a horror movie - not kidding. As with other aspects of WNYBAC, many hundreds of hours cleaning, painting and filling dumpsters with detritus (built up over decades in the 1920 ex-department store at 468 Washington St.) has transformed the space into something quite usable. Spearheaded by member/artist Anne Muntges, WNYBAC wants to help Anne see her vision through to completion.

Now we have hit a wall and need your help.

The space will be used for screen printing and papermaking but we are missing a few key things:  a proper washout station (plumbing pipes are rotten and sink cannot fit screens), efficient lighting, additional ventilation and some other print supplies that have not already been acquired. Please help us in the final stretch in our efforts to make the studio safe and completely usable.

The video shows many hours of work condensed into a minute. We are serious about what we do but we need funding to finish this project.

THE REWARDS
Lots of great screen printed rewards await. Stop and visit us at WNYBAC! we love to show the place to people and mentor new printers in the shop.
